Shy, bookish, and admittedly, awkward, Lily Greene has always felt inadequate compared to the rest of her accomplished family, who strive for black excellence. She dreams of becoming an editor of of children’s books, but has been frustratingly stuck in the nonfiction division for years without a promotion in sight. Lily finds escapism in her correspondence with her favorite fantasy author, and what begins as too lonely people connecting over emails turns into a tentative friendship and possibly something else Lily won’t let herself entertain until—he ghost her.
What a cute easy read, especially for my favorite holiday, Valentine’s Day! This was also February’s book of the month with @friendswithbooks_ ❤️💖 This will definitely not be my last Kristina Forest book I read. I loved the simplicity of a romance story with the depth our two main characters had. Both Lily and Nick were so easy to fall in love with as well as the side characters. I loved the whole premise of them being e-mail buddies then by faith they end up being neighbors. Even though Lily didn’t know it, Forest had a beautiful way of making the story come back full circle.
... Read moreAfter finishing 'The Neighbor Favor,' I honestly couldn't stop thinking about Lily and Nick! What really struck me, beyond the charming plot, was how Kristina Forest masterfully built their connection. You know that feeling when you're reading a book and you just get the characters? That's exactly how I felt with Lily. Her shyness and ambition resonated so much with my own experiences as a book lover. And Nick? His mysterious fantasy author persona turning into her actual neighbor was just *chef's kiss*! It's one of those delightful 'pen pals to real-life romance' tropes, but with a fresh, modern twist that felt incredibly authentic.
One of the things that makes 'The Neighbor Favor' stand out, especially for fans of black romance novels, is the genuine portrayal of Lily's journey. It’s so refreshing to see a story where the female lead is chasing her career dreams while also navigating a beautifully unfolding love story. Kristina Forest has a talent for crafting characters that feel like your friends – flawed, relatable, and utterly lovable. If you're diving into the world of romance books with black female leads, this book is an absolute must-add to your TBR pile. It showcases the richness and diversity within the genre, moving beyond stereotypes and giving us deeply developed protagonists.
Speaking of which, if you loved 'The Neighbor Favor' as much as I did, you're probably wondering what to read next! I'd highly recommend checking out some other incredible black romance authors. Talia Hibbert's works, like 'Get a Life, Chloe Brown,' offer similar heartwarming vibes with quirky, unforgettable characters. Or, for something a bit more steamy but still with that emotional depth, try Kennedy Ryan's 'Before I Let Go.' These authors, much like Kristina Forest, excel at delivering compelling love stories that celebrate black joy and love.
And for those of you, like me, who might have searched 'the neighbor favor movie' after finishing the book – can you imagine this on screen?! The quirky meet-cute, the email banter, the palpable chemistry... it just screams movie magic! While there's no official movie adaptation *yet*, I really hope it happens. It has all the elements for a fantastic romantic comedy that would capture the essence of the book perfectly. The cover art itself, often displayed beautifully on a Kindle e-reader as you might have seen, with its vibrant depiction of Lily and Nick on their balconies, already feels so cinematic and perfectly encapsulates the story's charm. It perfectly sets the scene for the sweet, modern romance within.
Ultimately, 'The Neighbor Favor' isn't just a book; it's an experience. It reminds us that love can blossom in the most unexpected places and that sometimes, the person you’re meant to be with is right next door (or has been in your inbox all along!). It’s the kind of story you finish with a happy sigh and an urge to recommend to everyone you know. So, if you're ready for a genuinely sweet, engaging, and beautifully written romance, do yourself a favor and pick up Kristina Forest's 'The Neighbor Favor.'
