Bright, ambitious, and yearning for adulthood, fifteen-year-old Vanessa Wye becomes entangled in an affair with Jacob Strane, her magnetic and guileful forty-two-year-old English teacher. 2017. Amid the rising wave of allegations against powerful men, a reckoning is coming due.
Wow, just wow. I’ve read a lot of books based on things that take place but the way Kate Elizabeth Russell makes you feel like you’re in Vanessa’s head was just truly powerful. At times I wanted to reach inside the book and give Vanessa a good shake and at other times I wanted to hug her and protect her from this awful world.
Vanessa is so smart and complicated which makes it even harder to be 15 year old girl which Strane sees and takes full advantage of her situation. All Vanessa wants is to be loved and taken care of and she seeks this out in Strane.
I really appreciated how Russell portrays Strane. He’s not this overly attractive man, in my opinion he’s quite gross but that’s the point. The angle this story takes on such a serious matter, will stick with me.
“The excuses we make for them are outrageous, but they’re nothing compared with the ones we make for ourselves.”

... Read moreIf you've been seeing 'My Dark Vanessa' by Kate Elizabeth Russell pop up everywhere, or perhaps you've been intrigued by its striking book cover—that mesmerizing image of a woman's face with a butterfly, often rendered in haunting purple tones, a true New York Times Bestseller—you're probably wondering what makes this novel so impactful. Having just devoured this book, I can tell you it’s a read that stays with you long after the final page, profoundly affecting how you view memory, power, and perception.
Kate Elizabeth Russell's genius lies in her ability to plunge you deep into Vanessa Wye's psyche. It's not just a story about Vanessa; you truly inhabit her mind, feeling her confusion, her yearning, and the devastating long-term effects of her relationship with Jacob Strane. The book masterfully navigates between Vanessa's past as a fifteen-year-old entangled with her forty-two-year-old English teacher and her present as an adult grappling with the implications of the #MeToo movement. This dual timeline is crucial, allowing Russell to explore the insidious nature of emotional manipulation and how a victim's own narrative can become warped over time. Reading it, I often felt a pull between wanting to shake young Vanessa and wanting to fiercely protect her, a testament to the author's incredible character development.
Now, let's talk about Jacob Strane. Russell's portrayal of him is chillingly realistic. He's not depicted as some conventionally attractive villain, but rather as a calculating, manipulative individual whose power comes from his position and his ability to exploit vulnerability. He's undeniably gross, as my initial review noted, and that deliberate choice makes his character all the more unsettling and authentically disturbing. The novel doesn't shy away from the ugliness of his actions, forcing the reader to confront the difficult realities of abuse without glorifying it. It's a nuanced look at a predatory figure, allowing us to understand the complex dynamics at play without ever excusing his behavior.
One of the most powerful aspects of 'My Dark Vanessa' is its exploration of memory and complicity—the excuses we make for others, and perhaps more disturbingly, the ones we make for ourselves. It forces readers to question how we perceive victims and perpetrators, and the societal structures that allow such relationships to flourish. The book is incredibly thought-provoking, sparking crucial conversations about consent, grooming, and the long-lasting psychological scars left by trauma. It's a challenging read, undoubtedly, which is why checking trigger warnings is absolutely essential for anyone considering picking up this book. But for those ready to confront its difficult subject matter, 'My Dark Vanessa' offers a deeply insightful and unforgettable literary experience that fully earns its place as a 5-star read.
