Plants that are actually worth propagating 🌿✂️😌

5/4 Edited to

... Read morePropagating houseplants can be an incredibly rewarding experience, both for enhancing your indoor garden and for saving money or even making a little extra cash. From personal experience, some plants are genuinely easier and more worthwhile to propagate than others, especially if you’re new to it. For example, pothos is probably the easiest starter plant I’ve worked with — its roots develop in about 10 days, and a single cutting can multiply into a dozen plants by summer. It’s forgiving, hardy, and requires minimal fuss, making it perfect for beginners. Similarly, spider plants automatically produce baby plantlets that start rooting before you even snip them off. I find that simply potting these babies transforms your collection quickly. Tradescantia, also known as inch plant, is another fantastic option. It roots within 3-5 days in water and grows lush and full in just a few weeks. It’s fascinating watching new shoots sprout so rapidly. For those interested in higher-value propagation, monstera cuttings can be sold online for $15 to $40 each. Propagating your existing plants not only replenishes your garden but can help fund future plant hauls. Hoya propagation requires patience as they root slowly in sphagnum moss with indirect light, but collector cuttings can be valuable to enthusiasts. The ZZ plant is almost magical in propagation. Although it takes months, a single leaf buried in soil can develop an entire new rhizome. This slow process is very rewarding as it seems to defy expectations. Rubber plants benefit from propagation because leggy stems can be cut to encourage a fuller shape, so you’re improving your parent plant while creating one or more new ones. Even the tricky String of Pearls is surprisingly easy to propagate. Laying stems on damp soil and misting occasionally is enough to grow new plants—a great way to expand your oasis of greenery. Using tools like the Plant Flow app can also simplify identification and care tracking, increasing your success rates and enjoyment of this hobby. Practicing regular propagation has transformed my indoor space, making it more vibrant and sustainable while deepening my appreciation for plant life.
