Chicagoans eat tavern style pizza not deep dish!

Chicago

... Read moreOkay, fellow foodies, let's talk real Chicago pizza! I know everyone talks about deep dish, but if you truly want to eat like a local, you have to try tavern style. And my absolute favorite spot for this quintessential Chicago experience? Barraco's Pizza, especially their Evergreen Park IL location. I've been to a few of their Chicagoland locations over the years, but the warm, welcoming vibe and the consistent perfection at Evergreen Park just hit differently for me. So, what is tavern style? Imagine a thin, crispy crust, usually cut into small, easy-to-handle square pieces. It's designed for sharing, for grabbing a quick piece while socializing, maybe even standing up at a bar (hence the 'tavern' style name!). Unlike deep dish, which is definitely a knife-and-fork affair and a hearty meal on its own, tavern style is all about portability and that satisfying, addictive crunch. Barraco's masters this with a perfectly balanced crust – it’s not so thin that it's flimsy, but thin enough to achieve that delightful crispness in every bite. Their sauce has just the right amount of tang, and they are definitely not shy with the generous portions of cheese or your favorite toppings. My last visit to Barraco's in Evergreen Park was absolutely fantastic. The place has that classic, inviting neighborhood feel that makes you instantly comfortable. We ordered a large sausage and pepperoni, and it came out piping hot, glistening with melted cheese, and those signature square cuts. Each piece was a flavor bomb! It's the kind of pizza that makes you truly understand why Chicagoans are so passionate about their local spots. It’s perfect for a casual night out with friends or a lively family dinner. Plus, the service is always friendly and efficient – a major bonus in my book. For me, deep dish is an occasional treat, a rich, hearty meal that's almost an event in itself. But tavern style? That’s my everyday pizza, my comfort food. It’s lighter, you can enjoy more pieces without feeling overly stuffed, and the texture contrast is just so incredibly addictive. If you're visiting Chicago or even if you're a local who's somehow missed out on this gem, do yourself a huge favor and head to Barraco's for a true taste of what 'Chicago pizza' really means to many of us. It’s not just food; it’s a cultural experience, a delicious slice of true Chicagoland life. They have multiple Chicagoland locations, but if you're anywhere near Evergreen Park, definitely make the trip to that specific spot – it’s a gem. When you go, don't be afraid to try some classic toppings like their savory sausage, spicy pepperoni, or even their specialty combinations. The beauty of the square cut is that you can easily grab different slices to try various flavors without committing to a whole piece. Trust me, once you try their tavern style square pizza, you might just become a convert like me. It's a foodie must-try that truly showcases how diverse and delicious Chicago's pizza scene is beyond the deep-dish stereotype. This isn't just a meal; it's a piece of Chicago's heart, served up hot and crispy.

When people think of Chicago, the first thing that comes to mind is deep dish pizza. I love a good deep dish. That buttery crust, the insane amount of cheese, the chunky tomato sauce on top… it’s basically a lasagna in pizza form. But here’s the thing: most locals I know don’t eat it every w
