This eye-catching robot with a big head on it
At WAIC, one robot stopped almost everyone in their tracks. It had two robotic legs—but instead of a mechanical head, it wore a highly realistic female head and wandered through the exhibition hall. It was eye-catching, but also strangely unsettling, landing squarely in the “uncanny valley.”
Yet the bigger story isn’t this robot—it’s the pace of progress. More than 200 embodied AI and robotics companies are exhibiting at WAIC this year, showcasing breakthroughs in dexterous hands, bimanual manipulation, VLA models, world models, and autonomous skills. The technology is advancing faster than ever.
This also raises an interesting question: Do humanoid robots really need to look more human, or do they simply need to become more capable? As embodied AI moves from demonstrations to real-world deployment, intelligence, reliability, and useful skills may matter far more than a lifelike face.

Attending WAIC and witnessing the diversity of robots firsthand left a strong impression on me about the current state and future direction of robotics. The robot with the realistic female head indeed caught many by surprise, sparking mixed reactions due to the uncanny valley effect — where robots look almost human but not quite, creating a sense of unease. This experience made me ponder the ongoing debate in the robotics community: Should humanoid robots prioritize human-like appearances, or is functional capability more important? From what I observed and learned, many companies at WAIC focus heavily on enhancing robots' practical skills, such as advanced bimanual manipulation and autonomous decision-making, rather than simply improving facial realism. Technologies like Variable-Length Attention (VLA) models and world models enable robots to better understand and interact with their environments, which is crucial for real-world deployment. In my experience with robotics, a highly capable robot that can reliably perform complex tasks without a lifelike face offers greater value in industries like healthcare, manufacturing, and logistics. While a realistic human appearance may help in social robotics or customer-facing roles, the uncanny valley can hinder user acceptance if not executed perfectly. It's exciting to see how embodied AI is rapidly evolving, with over 200 companies pushing the boundaries of dexterous hands and autonomous skills at WAIC 2026. This event underscores the importance of balancing aesthetics with functionality. Going forward, I believe that a robot's intelligence, adaptability, and practical abilities will be key factors for success. As robots transition from labs and demos into real-world settings, their usefulness and interaction quality will ultimately determine their impact rather than how human-like they appear visually.
