From my own postpartum journey, I came to understand how birth isn’t just a physical event but a profound transformation that requires time to integrate—what can be seen as an "underworld time." This was beautifully illustrated by ancient practices such as the Mother Flame Ritual, which emphasizes warming the lower belly and closing the gate with conscious breathwork. This ritual symbolizes protecting the new mother’s vulnerable state, allowing her body and spirit to regain strength without rushing recovery. Postpartum anxiety often reflects this uncontained threshold state—a body and mind left open, alert, and uneasy because the transition after birth has not been fully honored or sealed. Modern culture’s push for the "bounce back" can exacerbate feelings of pressure and inadequacy, yet healing postpartum is about letting go of unrealistic expectations and truly allowing yourself time and grace. In my experience, lowering expectations meant accepting help and setting boundaries to reduce stress. I found that slowing down, practicing mindfulness, and gently reconnecting with my body helped close that open threshold, calming the alertness and anxiety.
