From my own experience, this feeling doesn’t mean something is wrong; instead, it signals a deep, internal shift. It’s helpful to see this transition not simply as a phase but as an initiation into a new version of yourself. One of the biggest challenges during this time is the shift in priorities and relationships. The person you were before motherhood inevitably changes because your responsibilities and perspectives expand and evolve. This can create grief for your old self while simultaneously fostering immense gratitude and love for your child. Recognizing that grief and gratitude can coexist has helped me accept my complex emotions. Physical and emotional exhaustion plays a major role too—sleep deprivation and constant vigilance put a heavy load on the nervous system, making it harder to feel grounded. Engaging in gentle self-care practices, like mindfulness or journaling about your feelings, can provide clarity and comfort. Modern culture often celebrates the arrival of the baby but overlooks the mother’s psychological and emotional transformation. I found that seeking communities or groups focused on maternal identity helped me feel less alone and more understood. Conversations around matrescence shed light on this uncharted territory and offer guidance through the disorienting moments. Most important is to remind yourself that you are not broken. This state of feeling lost or disoriented is a sign you are navigating unfamiliar territory—your nervous system, your mind, and your heart are all adapting to this profound new reality. Embracing the process as an opportunity for growth rather than a failure supports healing and empowerment on your motherhood journey.
