it’s not laziness, it’s mental overload

5/2 Edited to

... Read moreMental overload is an invisible burden that many carry daily, especially in roles that require constant multitasking, like parenting or managing a household. From my experience, the exhaustion doesn't come from being inactive but from the nonstop mental energy spent on remembering appointments, planning meals, organizing schedules, and thinking ahead for everyone else’s needs. Often, this constant cognitive effort is overlooked and misunderstood as laziness, which adds unnecessary guilt and stress. I found that acknowledging mental overload as a genuine and taxing challenge helps shift the narrative—not only for myself but also with those around me. One practical step I began to take was externalizing some of these mental tasks — using planners, digital reminders, and shared calendars with family members. This small habit gradually eased the feeling of carrying the entire mental load alone. Another important aspect is setting boundaries and learning to say no. Overcommitting leads to more mental chaos and increases feelings of being overwhelmed. Prioritizing self-care is essential—taking short breaks, practicing mindfulness, or simply acknowledging the need to pause allowed my mind to reset and recharge. Connecting with communities like #momlife or #overwhelmedmom forums helped me realize that mental overload is common and that sharing experiences can provide support and validation. Understanding that it’s not laziness but overload is critical to improving self-worth and enabling healthier coping mechanisms. In summary, recognizing mental overload and implementing practical strategies can transform how we manage daily mental demands and improve overall well-being.
