Appalachian Time

If you don’t know the clock tree in the Appalachia, you are very much missing out. The story is very old and nobody actually knows where these clocks come from but now everybody will leave clocks, watches, etc. they think a man who crafted clocks lost his beloved during child birth. Around these parts of the mountains you’d be lucky to run into a doctor, especially back then. This man lost the love of his life and his son who was meant to take over his craft. He lost everything but the clocks. He made clocks nonstop, carving them, even having some with names of loved ones he once had. People truly believe he went mad. One day this large tree was decorated with clocks, a tree they all walked past, not understanding how it even got there overnight. After a few years he put one up, and nobody saw him again, which is what I think he really wanted. I had the honor of putting up a cuckoo clock with rope about a decade ago with my family 🤍🕊️

The legend describes a clockmaker who endured unimaginable loss when his beloved wife died during childbirth and his son, who was to inherit the craft, was no longer there to carry on his legacy. The scarcity of medical care in the remote mountains at that time underscores the isolation and hardships faced by these communities. In remembrance and perhaps driven by grief, the clockmaker carved countless clocks, some inscribed with the names of his lost loved ones. The clocks became not just his craft but a moving tribute—each tick and tock echoing memories of the family he once had. Locals in the Appalachia still talk about the tree that mysteriously appeared adorned with these clocks, standing tall as a silent sentinel of time and mourning. For decades, the clock tree has inspired visitors to appreciate the depth of human emotion connected to timekeeping objects. The tradition of leaving clocks and watches symbolizes respect for the past and those who shaped the area’s history. Personal experiences, like the author’s family ritual of hanging a cuckoo clock with rope on the tree, highlight the continuing significance of this tradition. Visiting the clock tree offers a chance to connect with Appalachian culture beyond natural beauty, providing a glimpse into the personal histories woven into the region’s fabric. For those interested in folk art, local legend, or Appalachian history, the clock tree serves as a poignant landmark—reminding us how objects carry emotional weight and connect generations across time.
