What Beauty Editors Get Wrong About Black Skin

🧴Blog: “What Beauty Editors Get Wrong About Black Skin Every Time”

Beauty editors love giving advice like we’re all working with the same skin.

But for those of us with melanin-rich skin, it’s never that simple.

They skip the part where:

→ Hyperpigmentation sticks around for months

→ Scars hit deeper and last longer

→ “Universal” products don’t actually work on us

We don’t need another watered-down tip list.

We need products that see us from the start not as a footnote.

And we need the people writing about skincare to stop ignoring the science of Black skin.

I wrote this because I’m tired of the industry pretending it knows our skin better than we do.

2025/7/14 Edited to

... Read moreThe skincare industry has long struggled to adequately address the unique needs of Black skin, frequently providing generalized advice that fails to account for the distinct characteristics associated with melanin-rich skin. Hyperpigmentation, which can linger for months, and scars that penetrate deeper and take longer to heal, present real challenges that differ significantly from those experienced by lighter skin tones. Unfortunately, many beauty editors and mainstream skincare guidance overlook these nuances, instead promoting "universal" products that do not effectively serve this demographic. Understanding the science behind Black skin is crucial. Melanin, while providing natural protection against UV radiation, also influences how the skin reacts to injury and inflammation. This can lead to prolonged post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and requires specialized treatment approaches. Thus, skincare products formulated without considering these factors often prove inadequate. Consumers with melanin-rich skin deserve products and advice that reflect a comprehensive understanding of their skin's biology rather than one-size-fits-all solutions. Moreover, the beauty industry’s missteps extend beyond product formulation. The narratives constructed by beauty editors shape public perceptions and purchasing behaviors, and when these narratives dismiss the complexities of Black skin, they perpetuate misinformation and invisibility. Advocating for science-backed, culturally competent skincare guidance and product development is crucial for fostering inclusivity and efficacy. Brands and skincare professionals must prioritize research on Black skin and support the creation of tailored products that address hyperpigmentation, scarring, and other concerns unique to this group. Additionally, empowering consumers through education on appropriate skincare routines, product ingredients to seek or avoid, and the importance of patience in visible results will promote confidence and better skin health. This call for change aligns with movements like #BlackSkinDeservesBetter and #MelaninMatters, which emphasize dignity and respect in skincare conversations. Embracing these principles will encourage a more inclusive, scientifically informed skincare industry that sees and serves Black skin as it deserves—not as an afterthought but as a priority.
