When focusing on shoulder development, rear delts often get overlooked despite being essential for balanced shoulder strength and posture. Seated face pulls are a fantastic exercise that target the rear delts effectively while promoting shoulder joint stability. In my experience, adding face pulls to my routine has improved my shoulder mobility and reduced discomfort during pressing movements. Face pulls work by activating the posterior deltoids and upper back muscles, which help counteract the forward rounded shoulder posture common from desk jobs or poor posture. Incorporating seated face pulls 2-3 times a week, with controlled form and moderate weight, ensures these smaller muscles are strengthened without overloading them. Additionally, face pulls serve as a corrective movement for shoulder health by promoting scapular retraction and external rotation, reducing the risk of injuries like impingement or rotator cuff strains. For best results, focus on squeezing the shoulder blades together at the peak contraction and avoid using momentum. Besides muscle development, consistent practice of face pulls has helped me maintain healthy shoulders through heavy lifting phases, contributing to better overall upper body strength and performance. I recommend pairing them with compound lifts and stretching routines for optimal shoulder care.
