Did I do the right thing? 🥹
My grandma left us last week and her final days were so heart wrenching. She was all confused and stuck in a fog where she thought she was a little kid again. The only thing she kept repeating over and over was “I don’t wanna go alone.” It broke my heart every time she said it.
I couldn’t stand seeing her so terrified, so I knelt down by her bed, took her hand, and lied. “They’re right there waiting for you” I said. “Mom’s got that potato soup you love simmering on the stove, and Dad’s polished up your old piano, he’s been asking when you’ll play for him again.” Her face softened right away. She smiled and looked up at the ceiling and whispered: “Okay, then. I’m ready.”
Ten minutes later, she was gone peaceful. I’ve been going back and forth ever since, was lying wrong? But she didn’t die scared. She left with a smile. Does that make it okay?
They were waiting for her and she needed comforting and you did what you had to do. I hope that someone will think enough of me to do the same.
