Make Your Own Candle @ Wick & Pour🕯️😝

Attended an engaging candle making workshop where an expert guided us through the entire process. Started with an introduction to the materials and explored various fragrances. Chose a jar and wick, mixed and measured the wax with our selected scents, and decorated our creations. After letting them cool, we had unique, handmade candles to take home. The workshop lasted an enjoyable 1 hour and 45 minutes🎉Wick and Pour #unfiltered #Lemon8Diary #nycguide #littleitaly

... Read moreAfter my amazing Candle Making Experience at Wick & Pour, I felt so inspired to keep crafting! While a workshop like theirs is fantastic for a guided session, sometimes you just want to get creative at home. So, if you're wondering how to make candles at home step by step, or even looking for other candle making classes beyond the city center, I've got some tips for you! DIY Candle Making at Home: A Simple Starter Guide Making your own candles at home is actually quite rewarding and doesn't require a huge investment. Here's a basic rundown, perfect for beginners: Gather Your Supplies: You'll need wax (soy wax flakes are popular for their clean burn), wicks (pre-tabbed are easiest), a heat-proof container (like an old jam jar or a specific candle jar), fragrance oils (essential oils work too!), a double boiler setup (or a heat-proof pitcher in a pot of water), a thermometer, and wick clips/holders. Melt the Wax: Place your wax flakes in your double boiler. Heat gently until the wax is fully melted and reaches the recommended temperature for your type of wax (usually around 180-185°F for soy wax). Use your thermometer to keep an eye on it! Add Fragrance: Once your wax is melted and at the correct temperature (often a bit cooler, around 160-180°F, before pouring), stir in your chosen fragrance oil. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations for scent load – usually about 1 ounce of fragrance per pound of wax. Stir gently for a couple of minutes to ensure it's fully incorporated. Prepare Your Jar & Pour: Secure your wick to the bottom center of your clean, dry jar using a wick sticker or a dab of hot glue. Use a wick holder or clothespin across the top of the jar to keep the wick centered and straight. Carefully pour the melted wax into your prepared jar. Cure Time: This is the hardest part – patience! Let your candle cool and harden completely, ideally for at least 24-48 hours. For best scent throw, many recommend curing soy candles for up to 1-2 weeks. This allows the fragrance to bind properly with the wax. Trim and Enjoy: Once fully cured, trim your wick to about 1/4 inch before lighting. Enjoy your handmade creation! *Pro-Tip for Beginners:* If you're looking for a super simple, temporary candle, you can even melt old crayon bits into a small container with a piece of cotton string (soaked in oil for a makeshift wick). It's not a long-lasting solution, but it's a fun experiment for how to make a candle with household items! Exploring More Candle Making Classes & Studios While Wick & Pour was an incredible Candle Making Experience for me, NYC has a vibrant crafting scene. If you're searching for "candle making classes Brooklyn" or other neighborhoods, a quick Google search will often reveal local studios offering similar workshops. Many places also offer "the candle pour" type events, which are perfect for a fun outing with friends. Don't forget to check out local craft fairs or community centers, as they sometimes host pop-up classes. Whether you try DIY at home or book another workshop, the joy of creating a custom candle is truly special!
