... Read moreWhen I first started journaling, I genuinely believed it was just about putting pen to paper and recording thoughts. While that’s a beautiful core of the practice, I soon discovered a whole world of creative journaling elements that transformed my experience entirely. It's incredible how much richness and personality you can infuse into your pages once you start exploring beyond just words. My personal journey into mixed-media journaling began when I saw beautifully adorned journal spreads online – not just text, but visual stories. I realized that my journal could be a canvas, not just a notebook. One of my absolute favorite elements to incorporate now are visuals. This could be simple sketches of things I see during my day, little doodles that express my mood, or more elaborate drawings. I’ve even started dabbling with paint bottles to add washes of color, creating a vibrant backdrop for my thoughts. It really brings a different dimension to reflecting on experiences. Then there’s the wonderful world of ephemera and paper scraps. This is where true personalization shines through. I collect all sorts of bits and bobs: old postcards, handwritten notes from friends, interesting packaging, dried leaves, and even fabric swatches. Tearing or cutting these into unique shapes and arranging them into a collage on a page feels incredibly therapeutic. Sometimes I'll use a craft knife for precision, but often, the raw edge of torn paper adds character. Seeing a wall densely covered with a collage of memories really inspired me to bring that same energy into my journal. It’s like creating a mini art gallery within your book, where each piece tells a part of your story. Of course, no discussion of journaling elements would be complete without mentioning stickers and washi tape. These are game-changers for adding quick bursts of color, texture, and theme. I’m particularly fond of nature-themed stickers – plants, mushrooms, celestial bodies – that complement my reflections on growth and the universe. Washi tape is fantastic for borders, holding down little bits of paper, or just adding a decorative strip across a page. It's amazing how these small art supplies can elevate a simple entry into something visually captivating. Beyond these, the choice of journaling materials themselves plays a huge role. I love experimenting with different types of paper – some are perfectly smooth for ink, others have a slight texture that's great for pencils or even light watercolors. Having a variety of pens, from fine liners to brush pens, allows for different styles of writing and lettering. Ultimately, my favorite part about journaling is the freedom to combine all these elements – text, sketches, colorful paper scraps, stickers, and more – to create a truly personalized journal spread that captures my experiences in a way words alone never could. It's about letting your creativity flow and building a rich, practical, and beautiful record of your life.
