Two weeks ago I took the sprouted seeds out of a Granny Smith apple. Although I know it will take years to bear fruit. I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to test my growing skills. 🥰 #grow fruits and vegetables #beginnergardening
I totally get the excitement of starting a gardening experiment, just like with my Granny Smith apple seeds! It's truly fascinating to watch life emerge from something so small. While my apple seeds are a long-term project, it got me thinking about the fundamental question: what exactly does a plant need to grow and thrive? And how can we, as home gardeners, explore this in fun, hands-on ways? Beyond just planting a seed and hoping for the best, there are some really cool, simple experiments you can do right at home to understand the core needs of almost any plant. It's like becoming a plant detective! 1. The Light Experiment: Sun vs. Shade This is perhaps the easiest one. Grab two identical small plants (like bean sprouts or radish seedlings) and two identical pots. Place one plant in a spot that gets plenty of direct sunlight for several hours a day, and the other in a consistently shady spot (but not completely dark). Make sure to water both equally. Over a week or two, you'll likely see a dramatic difference! The plant in the sun will usually be greener, stronger, and grow taller, showing just how vital light is for photosynthesis. It's a real eye-opener! 2. The Water Experiment: Too Much, Too Little, Just Right Water is crucial, but did you know too much can be as bad as too little? Try this: get three identical small plants. Plant A: Water consistently, ensuring the soil is moist but not soggy. Plant B: Water only when the soil is completely dry and the plant starts to wilt slightly. Plant C: Water frequently, keeping the soil constantly wet or even boggy. Observe them daily. Plant B might recover if watered in time, but Plant C will likely suffer from root rot, turning yellow and eventually dying because its roots can't breathe. This experiment really highlights the balance needed for watering. 3. The Soil & Nutrient Test: What's in the Pot? Different soils offer different nutrients and drainage. For this, you could try planting the same type of seeds (like fast-growing radishes or lettuce) in three different mediums: Pot 1: Regular potting mix. Pot 2: Pure sand (often low in nutrients, good drainage). Pot 3: Plain garden soil or even just water with a tiny bit of liquid plant food (hydroponics experiment!). Watch how each seed germinates and grows. You'll quickly see the impact of a good, nutrient-rich potting mix compared to sand, which might struggle to support growth, or the special care needed for water-based growing. 4. Temperature Talk: Warmth Matters Temperature affects plant metabolism. If you have a slightly warmer spot (like near a window that gets afternoon sun) and a slightly cooler, consistent spot in your home, you could try growing two identical seedlings in each. Keep all other factors (light, water, soil) the same. You might find that the warmer environment encourages faster growth, up to a certain point. Just be careful not to expose plants to extreme heat or cold! These little experiments aren't just for kids; they're fantastic for us adult beginners too! They demystify plant care and turn abstract concepts into tangible lessons. It makes you appreciate every tiny sprout even more. By observing these basics, you'll become much more attuned to what your plants are trying to tell you, whether it's a thirsty leaf or a stem stretching for more light.
