Anxiety is becoming a problem with me and cars
It’s incredible how driving anxiety can sneak up on you and truly start to feel like it’s ruining your life. I never thought I’d be someone who felt that deep sense of dread behind the wheel, but a series of experiences with my cars really brought me to a breaking point. I remember when I had my RX8. It felt like that car had a 'problem' that always seemed to translate into 'the driver' feeling inadequate, even when it was clearly not just me, but the car itself. There were constant issues – I dealt with the 'engine' blowing up, the 'cylinder head' needing work... it just felt like a 'dumb system' that was always failing me. I spent so much time 'working on cars' in 'this garage' trying to fix 'everything I can,' but the stress was immense. I’d get so 'nervous' just thinking about a long drive, fearing another breakdown. There were moments I truly started to 'hate driving' because it felt like a trap. I remember getting so anxious, almost 'tearing up' at the thought of another bill. When the RX8 really packed it in, I made the tough decision to 'sold' it because I simply couldn't 'afford' to put a 'new motor in it'. That period was tough, and my driving anxiety was at an all-time high. But that wasn't the end of my story. I eventually got the Miata, and something shifted. It wasn't just a new car; it was a new perspective. I started to actively work on 'how to get over fear of driving' and 'how to beat driving anxiety.' One of the biggest things I realized was the importance of preparation and trust. I made sure my Miata was always in top shape, doing regular checks myself. This gave me a sense of control that I lacked with the previous car. Beyond the mechanical, I also started exploring techniques like 'meditation for driving anxiety.' Even simple deep breathing exercises before getting in the car, or focusing on the road ahead rather than what might go wrong, made a huge difference. I learned to challenge those anxious thoughts – instead of saying 'it makes no sense' for me to feel this way, I acknowledged the feeling and then gently redirected my focus. Starting with short, familiar routes helped rebuild my confidence. I’d just focus on 'putting miles' on the car for the sheer joy of it, not just necessity. It's a journey, not a destination. There are still days when I feel a flicker of that old nervousness, but now I have tools to manage it. The Miata helped me rediscover the joy of driving, and understanding that some 'problems' are with the car, not the 'driver,' was a huge breakthrough. If you're struggling, remember you're not alone. Finding a reliable vehicle, understanding basic car maintenance, and incorporating mindfulness can truly help you get back on the road feeling more confident and less anxious.
