Diabetes Type 2: Everything You Need to Know!

If you’re a nursing student or prepping for the NCLEX, Type 2 Diabetes is a must-know topic! Here’s a breakdown:

What is Type 2 Diabetes?

A chronic condition where the body still produces insulin but doesn’t use it effectively (insulin resistance). Leads to high blood sugar levels.

Risk Factors:

   •   Obesity

   •   Sedentary lifestyle

   •   Family history

   •   High blood pressure & cholesterol

   •   Poor diet

Signs & Symptoms:

   •   The 3 P’s: Polyuria (excessive urination), Polydipsia (excessive thirst), Polyphagia (excessive hunger)

   •   Fatigue

   •   Slow wound healing

   •   Blurry vision

   •   Frequent infections

Complications:

   •   Microvascular: Neuropathy, retinopathy, nephropathy

   •   Macrovascular: Heart disease, stroke

   •   HHNS (Hyperosmolar Hyperglycemic Nonketotic Syndrome) → High blood sugar, dehydration, NO ketones

Management:

✅ Diet: Low-carb, high-fiber, healthy fats

✅ Exercise: 30 mins/day, 5x per week

✅ Meds: Metformin (first-line), insulin if severe

✅ Monitor blood sugar regularly

NCLEX TIP:

Know the difference between DKA (Type 1) & HHNS (Type 2)!

... Read moreType 2 Diabetes is often characterized by insulin resistance, leading to elevated blood sugar levels over time. Symptoms may develop gradually, including frequent urination, increased hunger, fatigue, and blurred vision. Management includes dietary changes focusing on whole foods, regular physical activity to improve insulin sensitivity, and blood sugar monitoring. Medications such as Metformin may be prescribed to help control blood sugar levels effectively. It’s important for individuals to understand the implications of lifestyle factors like diet and exercise on their condition, and ongoing education about diabetes management is critical for preventing complications. Regular check-ups with healthcare providers can improve disease outcomes and enhance quality of life. Understanding the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes, including the associated complications like neuropathy and cardiovascular disease, is crucial for all health professionals.

Do you know the ONE thing that can make/break any diabetes NCLEX question?!
TYPE 1 vs TYPE 2 DIABETES 🩸 Type 1 = NO insulin 🔹 Autoimmune destruction of beta cells 🔹 Usually younger patients 🔹 Requires insulin for life 🔹 Think DKA Type 2 = INSULIN RESISTANCE 🔹 Insulin is present, but cells don’t respond well 🔹 Often linked to obesity, genetics, and lifestyle 🔹
