🌟Stroke Volume 🫀

What Is Stroke Volume?

Stroke Volume (SV) = the amount of blood the heart pumps out with each beat.

Think of it like the “strength” of each heartbeat.

The Formula (Super Simple)

SV = EDV – ESV

   •   EDV (End-Diastolic Volume): Blood in the ventricle before it contracts

   •   ESV (End-Systolic Volume): Blood left after it contracts

Example: 120 mL – 50 mL = 70 mL

Stroke Volume affects:

   •   Cardiac Output (CO = HR x SV)

   •   Oxygen delivery

   •   Exercise capacity

   •   Heart function

... Read moreStroke Volume (SV) is crucial in assessing heart functionality and overall cardiovascular health. It is determined by several factors including contractility, preload, and afterload. Understanding these determinants can help in enhancing cardiac output (CO), which is calculated by the formula CO = HR x SV. Contractility refers to the heart's ability to contract forcefully, influenced by the heart muscle's strength and health. Preload is the amount of blood in the ventricle at the end of diastole, while afterload is the pressure against which the heart must work to eject blood during systole. For the right side of the heart, Central Venous Pressure (CVP) is measured for preload and Pulmonary Vascular Resistance (PVR) for afterload; for the left side, Pulmonary Capillary Wedge Pressure (PCWP) and Systemic Vascular Resistance (SVR) are used respectively. Any change in these factors can significantly affect cardiac output, impacting overall health and physical performance. Understanding these concepts is essential for nursing students, medical professionals, and anyone interested in heart health.
