These have helped us a lot with having a healthy mindset around food
From my own experience, fostering a healthy mindset about food in children really comes down to normalization and accessibility. One thing I've found useful is not forcing kids to finish every bite on their plate. This removes the pressure to eat out of obligation and helps them listen to their natural hunger cues. It’s important children don’t feel forced into clean-plate clubs, as this can lead to unhealthy food relationships later in life. Another key practice is avoiding labeling foods as "good" or "bad." Instead, I talk about food as fuel and energy, emphasizing balance. When treats like candy are always hidden or off-limits, kids often become more obsessed with them. Making treats accessible without restriction helps reduce their 'forbidden fruit' appeal, so they ask for sweets less frequently. I also regularly allow my child to have treats, which helps demystify sugar and sweets. Watching neighborhood kids come over and eagerly devour candy because it’s restricted at their homes showed me how deprivation can intensify cravings. Teaching moderation instead of prohibition is crucial. Incorporating these strategies has truly helped my family enjoy food without guilt or stress. It’s about creating a relaxed attitude that food is a part of life and is meant to be enjoyed, while still maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Sharing these tips with other parents encourages mindful eating habits that support long-term wellness for our kids.
