... Read moreYou know that feeling, right? When you're just going about your day, and then something small happens, like someone slightly raises their voice, and suddenly, your mind is flooded. My intrusive thoughts just won in that moment, and it felt like everything spiraled. It's not about the person or what they said, but about how my own mind took that tiny trigger and ran with it. It's like my brain hit a panic button, even when there was no real danger. One minute I'm fine, the next, I'm caught in a loop of 'What did I do wrong?' or 'They must be mad at me' – even if it was just a normal, slightly louder tone. That's when I feel myself *letting my intrusive thoughts win*. It's frustrating because intellectually, I know it's probably not a big deal, but emotionally, it feels like the end of the world. I've realized that for me, a raised voice is a huge trigger. It's not about being sensitive; it's about how my brain processes that specific stimulus and what old anxieties it dredges up. When those thoughts start to take over, it's a really isolating feeling. You feel like you're overreacting, but you can't stop the internal narrative. So, how do we deal with these moments when our intrusive thoughts feel like they're taking the wheel? I've been trying a few things. First, simply acknowledging it. Telling myself, 'Okay, this is an intrusive thought. It's not reality.' It doesn't always stop it, but it helps create a little distance. Sometimes, I try to ground myself – focusing on five things I can see, four things I can touch, etc. It pulls me back to the present. Another thing that sometimes helps me is journaling immediately after. Just getting those swirling thoughts down on paper, even if it's just 'I feel like my intrusive thoughts won because he raised his voice at me,' can be really cathartic. It's a way to externalize them instead of letting them bounce around inside. And honestly, sometimes it's just about riding the wave. Accepting that for a few minutes, or even longer, my intrusive thoughts are going to be loud. It’s hard, but fighting them often makes them stronger. I'm learning to be kinder to myself during these times. It's a journey, and every time I learn something new about how my mind works, it feels like a small victory, even if my intrusive thoughts temporarily win a battle. Knowing others go through this too makes a huge difference. We're all just trying to navigate our own minds.
