When is the best time to start a new book?

Listen, I have two projects already going, one is almost done and set to publish this year. As far as, my debut novel… she’s getting close 🤞🏻! That one is set to release next year hopefully. HOWEVER, I already started outlining another book that has been in my head the last few days.

So, when do you think it’s best to start on a new idea? What have you done?

... Read moreOh, the eternal writer's question: 'When is the best time to write another book?' I totally get it! That moment when a brilliant new idea sparks, and suddenly, you're itching to dive into it, even if you have several other literary babies demanding your attention. Just like the image says, sometimes you just start outlining your new book even when you've told yourself you wouldn't! It's a delicate balance, isn't it? On one hand, you don't want to lose that creative spark. On the other, you have commitments to your current works-in-progress. My debut novel is nearing completion, and another project is almost ready for publishing, yet here I am, outlining a whole new world! It feels a bit like cheating on my current characters, but the muse can be a demanding mistress. So, how do we navigate this? I've found a few strategies that help me manage the urge to write another book without completely abandoning my existing commitments. First, I try to dedicate specific "idea time." This isn't writing time for current projects, but rather a space to jot down everything about the new idea – characters, plot points, world-building snippets. Sometimes, just getting it all out on paper (or in a digital document) is enough to satisfy the initial creative burst without fully committing to a new draft. It's like giving the idea a temporary home. Second, consider the 'why.' Why is this new idea so compelling *right now*? Is it a form of procrastination from a difficult part of your current book? Or is it a genuine, undeniable call from your creative wellspring? Being honest with yourself about the motivation can guide your next steps. If it's procrastination, maybe a short break or a change of scene for your current project is what's needed. If it's a true creative flood, then finding a way to incorporate it, perhaps through outlining, is key. Another thing I've learned is to embrace the outline. As one of the images humorously states, "I lied, I just started outlining my new book 🥺." Outlining is a fantastic way to develop an idea without fully committing to the massive undertaking of a full draft. It allows you to explore the concept, see if it has legs, and build a foundation. You can then set it aside, knowing it's ready for when you are truly finished with your current projects. I also find it helpful to create a 'project board' – whether it's a physical corkboard or a digital Trello board. Each project gets its own space, with clear goals and deadlines. This visual reminder helps keep me accountable and provides a sense of progress on each story. When a new idea comes along, it gets its own 'idea' card, but it doesn't jump to the top of the 'active writing' pile until a slot opens up. Finally, don't underestimate the power of creative breaks. Sometimes, stepping away from an intense project and letting your mind wander is exactly what generates those fresh, new ideas. Instead of feeling guilty about them, view them as a sign that your creative engine is still running strong. Ultimately, there's no single "best time to write another book" that fits everyone. It's about finding what works for you and your unique creative flow. What are your strategies, fellow writers? How do you juggle multiple brilliant story ideas without losing momentum on your existing projects? I'd love to hear your insights!
