Baby is practicing breathing!

... Read moreOh my goodness, fellow mamas and mamas-to-be! I'm still buzzing from our private ultrasound today at 16 weeks and 6 days. The most incredible thing happened – we actually saw our little one practicing breathing in the womb! It truly felt like watching a tiny miracle unfold right before our eyes on the screen. It got me thinking a lot about what exactly 'practicing breathing' means for a baby inside. When I first heard it, I imagined them taking in tiny breaths of air, which isn't quite right! What they're actually doing is making breathing-like movements with their diaphragm and chest muscles, drawing amniotic fluid into their lungs and pushing it back out. This is absolutely crucial for their lung development and helps prepare them for taking their first real breath of air after birth. It's like their little body's practice run! I did a bit of reading, and apparently, these fetal breathing movements (FBMs) can start as early as 10 to 12 weeks, but they become more regular and noticeable as the pregnancy progresses. Seeing it on the ultrasound (or 'US' as they call it!), especially around the 16-week mark, was just so reassuring. The sonographer pointed out the subtle, rhythmic movements of the chest wall, and it was just mesmerizing. It's amazing how much activity is happening in there, even when you can't feel it yet! Some of you might be wondering, 'What if my baby isn't practicing breathing on an ultrasound?' From what I've learned, it's pretty normal! Babies have sleep cycles in the womb, just like they do out here. Sometimes, they might just be resting during your scan. If your doctor isn't concerned, usually there's no need to worry. However, if you have any concerns, always chat with your healthcare provider. And for those asking about a super active baby in the womb – it’s usually a great sign! My little one had some energetic moments too, turning and wiggling. It often means they're healthy and alert. Sometimes, a sugary snack or drink can get them moving, or it might just be their natural rhythm. Don't worry too much about 'pregnant belly movements' being too much unless your doctor says so. As we approach the 20-week mark, many of us will have our detailed anatomy scan, which is another big milestone. They'll check everything from head to toe – organs, growth, and even look at things like their position and estimated size. It's where they might check for things like 'breech baby ultrasound hips' if the baby is positioned feet-first, or just generally assess development. Seeing the measurements, perhaps a '13.6cm' or similar, helps doctors track progress. It’s all part of the incredible journey of pregnancy, and every scan brings new insights and excitement. Keep savoring these moments!

How breathing works
Breathing is how the body takes in oxygen and removes carbon dioxide. Air enters through the nose, travels down the windpipe, and moves into the lungs through the bronchi. The lungs fill with air, allowing oxygen to pass into the blood. At the same time, carbon dioxide is taken from the blood and r
