There is always a feeling behind any behavior!

There is always a feeling behind your child’s behavior. And there is always a need underneath those feelings.

So many parenting struggles could be avoided by simply communicating with our kids. This isn’t always easy, and obviously all children are going to be at different communication levels. But we can help them learn early on to express how they are feeling so future problems can go smoother.

In my own parenting experience, I have found this to be my golden ticket. This does NOT mean that we have perfect household communication, or that my child never has melt downs. She has plenty of them. I do too sometimes 😂 but it does help those hard moments to be a little calmer and a little easier.

So the next time your child is screaming on the floor, or pouting in the corner, maybe try ask them how they’re feeling. Sometimes their response will surprise you!

If you have littles that can’t quite tell you what’s going on, that’s where you can narrate, and model this for them. Try telling them how your feeling. Then make on observation about how you think they might be feeling. Eventually as they learn to communicate better, this will be a natural part of their vocabulary!

... Read moreRecognizing and responding to your child’s emotions can transform your parenting experience. When children express themselves, it builds their emotional vocabulary, helping them articulate feelings and needs. Start by acknowledging their emotions; phrases like 'I see you're upset' can make them feel understood. As they grow, introduce books that discuss feelings to cultivate empathy and self-awareness. Encourage role-play, letting them act out different emotions. This can be a fun, engaging way to teach emotional literacy. Remember, communication isn’t just words; it’s also about modeling behaviors. Demonstrate how you navigate your own feelings to reinforce that it's okay to express emotions. Establishing a routine for daily check-ins, perhaps during dinner, allows kids to share their highlights and low moments. This practice strengthens the bond and opens pathways for discussions about feelings. If your child struggles with expressing emotions, consider collaborative parenting techniques that involve both caregivers in addressing emotional challenges consistently. By doing this, you create a stable environment where feelings are acknowledged, laying a foundation for mental health and resilience. Ultimately, fostering emotional awareness in children prepares them for complex social interactions in the future.
