Exploring Medellin
The one place that stole my heart on this first Colombia trip was Guatape. It’s the cutest, most colorful little town located two hours east of Medellin. I climbed El Penon de Guatape which had some of the best views I had ever seen at the top! I also enjoyed walking around the colorful streets and Plazoleta de Los Zocalos – a public plaza with brightly painted structures.
Even better and more importantly, the locals of Guatape were so sweet! I had such a great day there. No trip to Medellin (and Colombia) is complete without spending at least one full day exploring the highlights of Guatape.
Okay, so you've heard about Guatape from Medellin, and you're wondering how to make the most of it, right? I totally get it! After my amazing visit, I wanted to share some practical tips to help you plan your perfect day trip. First off, getting there. You have a few great options from Medellin. Many people, myself included, opt for a public bus from Terminal del Norte. It’s super straightforward! Just head to the terminal, find the ticket counters for Guatape, and grab your seat. The journey takes about two hours, and I found it to be a scenic ride, passing through rolling hills and that gorgeous 'lush greenery' you hear about. Buses are frequent and affordable, making it a budget-friendly choice. If you prefer more convenience, you can also book an organized tour, which often includes transport, a guide, and sometimes even a boat ride on the reservoir. Or, for ultimate flexibility, consider hiring a private driver, especially if you're traveling with a group. Once you arrive, the star attraction is undoubtedly El Peñol, also known as La Piedra del Peñol. This massive granite rock offers truly insane panoramic views, second to none! There are over 650 steps to reach the top, but trust me, every single step is worth it. I recommend wearing comfortable shoes and bringing water. There are little shops at the base and even along the way up where you can grab refreshments. The view from the top lets you see the stunning emerald green islands and peninsulas of the Peñol-Guatape reservoir – it’s a photographer's dream! After conquering El Peñol, head into the town of Guatape itself. It’s just a short tuk-tuk or bus ride away. This is where the real charm kicks in! Every building is adorned with vibrant colors and unique 'zócalos' – decorative, three-dimensional frescoes depicting scenes from daily life, local traditions, or abstract art. Spend time just wandering the streets, getting lost in the beauty. The Plazoleta de Los Zócalos is a must-see, but don't stop there! Explore every alley. You'll find charming cafes for a coffee or a traditional 'bandeja paisa.' I loved browsing the local artisan shops; you might even spot places similar to "Artesanias Rosalba" offering beautiful handmade souvenirs that are perfect to take a piece of Colombia home with you. It’s not just the main squares; every corner has a story. Beyond the colorful streets, the Guatape reservoir offers boat trips, kayaking, and even jet-skiing if you're feeling adventurous. I didn't get a chance to do a boat tour this time, but it looked incredibly relaxing. For food, try the fresh trout from the lake – it’s a local specialty! I found the best time to visit was early in the morning to beat the crowds at El Peñol, especially on weekends. And remember, Colombia is a tropical country, so pack light layers, sunscreen, and a hat. My biggest tip? Engage with the locals! They are genuinely the sweetest people, and their stories really add to the experience. A day in Guatape isn’t just a trip; it’s an immersion into Colombian joy!
