How to fix your photos app in your iPhone 👀

2024/12/14 Edited to

... Read moreIt's so frustrating when your iPhone Photos app suddenly decides to act up! I've been there myself, staring at a blank screen or having the app crash right when I wanted to show someone a picture. It feels like your whole digital life is stuck! When my photos weren't loading or the app was just glitching, I started looking for solutions, and honestly, sometimes the simplest tricks are the best. First off, if your Photos app is completely frozen or keeps crashing, the very first thing I always try is force-closing the app. Just swipe up from the bottom of your screen (or double-click the Home button on older models) to bring up the app switcher, then swipe the Photos app card upwards to close it. Give your iPhone a few seconds, then reopen Photos. Often, this is enough to clear a temporary hiccup. If that doesn't work, a full iPhone restart usually does the trick. Hold down the power button and either volume button until the 'Slide to Power Off' slider appears, then slide it. Wait a minute, then turn it back on. You'd be surprised how many 'why is my photos app not working iPhone' woes this solves! Sometimes the issue isn't with the app itself, but with your photos not loading properly from iCloud. If you're seeing blank thumbnails or 'waiting to download' messages, check your Wi-Fi connection first. Then, go to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > Photos. Make sure 'iCloud Photos' is toggled on. If you have 'Optimize iPhone Storage' enabled, your device only keeps smaller versions on your phone, downloading the full resolution ones when you view them. If your internet is slow, this can make it seem like photos aren't loading. You might even consider switching to 'Download and Keep Originals' if storage isn't an issue, just to see if it makes a difference. I once had a huge number of photos, like '5,092 Items' in my library, and optimizing storage helped, but occasionally I'd have loading delays. What if your Photos app search isn't working, or you can't find anything in 'Recent Days' or your 'Pinned Collections'? This can be super annoying when you're trying to find a specific memory. Sometimes, the Photos app needs to re-index your library. While there isn't a direct 're-index' button, ensuring your iPhone is connected to power and Wi-Fi overnight can often help the system perform background tasks, including re-indexing your photos. Also, check your iPhone's available storage in Settings > General > iPhone Storage. If your phone is running critically low on space, it can affect app performance, including search functions. If you have many videos, like the 0:14, 0:17, 0:10 durations seen in some photo libraries, these can take up significant space and impact performance. Finally, if you're experiencing issues with 'Suggested Memories' or finding that your Memories aren't updating or are showing irrelevant content, you can try resetting them. Go to Settings > Photos and scroll down to the 'Memories' section. You might find options to reset or adjust settings related to memories there. Sometimes, simply toggling iCloud Photos off and on again (after backing up, of course!) can kickstart things, though this is a more drastic step. Remember, keeping your iOS updated is generally a good idea for app stability, even if the primary article points out a specific iOS 18.2 scenario. These tips have helped me get my photo library back in order many times, so hopefully, they can help you too!
