What We Do When Kids @ Work! 😂😅😂
You know that feeling when summer rolls around, and you suddenly realize you have a troop of energetic mini-humans needing engagement? Or maybe it's that one special 'bring your child to work' day, and you're scrambling for ideas beyond just sitting them in a corner? Trust me, I've been there! My household, like many #marriedcouples, has learned a thing or two about turning 'kids at work' into genuinely positive (and sometimes hilariously chaotic) experiences. It's not just about getting tasks done; it's about teaching responsibility, building skills, and making memories. When summer hits, my first thought used to be, 'How do I keep them entertained and productive without resorting to endless screen time?' Over the years, we've developed a system that makes 'putting them to work' feel less like a chore and more like a shared adventure. This is truly 'what we do when kids work' in our home! For example, our garden becomes a little family project. Even the youngest can help water plants or pick ripe berries. It's amazing to see their pride when they harvest something we can eat for dinner! We also have 'car wash Fridays' where everyone gets involved, turning suds and sponges into a splashy good time. Beyond the fun, these activities teach them about effort and reward. Instead of just barking orders, I try to make it a team effort. We've even gamified organizing their rooms – who can sort their toys fastest? It’s not about perfection, but participation, and seeing them take ownership of their space. Sometimes, we'll even give them a 'budget' for a small project, like redecorating a corner of their room, and they have to plan and execute it themselves. Then there's the famous 'bring your child to work day.' This one can be tricky, depending on your job! My goal is always to make it an insightful, engaging experience, not just a day off school. I remember one year, I prepped a little 'scavenger hunt' around the office, where they had to find different departments and learn what each one did. It was a huge hit! For older kids, I try to give them small, actual tasks – maybe helping organize files, sorting mail, or even just observing a meeting and then discussing what they saw. It opens their eyes to the real world of work and helps them understand what Mom or Dad does all day. We talk about the different roles people play and how everyone contributes. It’s a fantastic opportunity to show them the value of hard work and how different roles contribute to a bigger picture, fostering a sense of curiosity about future careers. The key, I've found, is communication and setting clear expectations, but always keeping it light and fun. It's not about being a drill sergeant; it's about fostering a sense of contribution and responsibility. We celebrate their efforts, big or small, and emphasize that everyone helps maintain our happy home and contributes to our lives. Sometimes, their 'work' might even end up on a fun little video we make for family, just to capture the silly moments! Watching them grow in confidence and capability through these experiences is truly #blessedandhighlyfavored. So, if you're looking for ways to make 'kids at work' days memorable, whether it's summer chores or a special visit to your workplace, remember to infuse it with fun, learning, and lots of encouragement. It's an investment in their future (and maybe a little bit of help for you, too!). What are your favorite 'kids at work' strategies?
