Book couples who wouldn’t survive a marriage

2025/6/23 Edited to

... Read moreAs a huge book lover, I spend a lot of time thinking about the relationships I read about – not just the swoony, romantic parts, but also the messy, complicated realities. It’s fun to imagine happily-ever-afters, but sometimes, a couple just leaves you wondering how they’d ever make it past the first year of marriage, let alone a lifetime! My personal experience reading through countless novels has taught me that even in fiction, there are clear signs a relationship is doomed. Think about it: what truly makes a relationship healthy and sustainable? Open communication, mutual respect, unwavering support for each other's individual goals, and the ability to navigate conflict constructively. When these elements are missing, even the most passionate fictional romances can crumble. I’ve often found myself shaking my head at couples who constantly withhold feelings, try to control each other's actions, or neglect their individual interests for the sake of the relationship. These are often the red flags that scream "divorce" even before the wedding bells stop ringing! Let's dive into some specific book couples that, in my opinion, would absolutely not survive a marriage. Take Jules and Josh, for example. While their initial chemistry might be engaging, if a relationship is built on secrets, miscommunication, or a lack of fundamental trust, it's a recipe for disaster. Marriage requires a deeper level of honesty and transparency than some fictional couples ever achieve. Then there are Belly and Conrad from *The Summer I Turned Pretty*. Their story is a whirlwind of teenage angst and unresolved feelings, but honestly, their on-again, off-again dynamic and constant emotional turmoil don't exactly set them up for marital bliss. Communication is often poor, and their individual growth seems to happen independently rather than together. For a marriage to last, partners need to evolve with each other, not constantly apart. The OCR images even highlighted "Belly and Conrad" and "the summer I turned pretty," making them prime examples. And can we talk about Colleen Hoover's couples? Many readers, myself included, often find her relationships, while incredibly compelling and emotionally charged, tend to lean towards the toxic or unhealthy. The intense drama and passionate arguments can be captivating, but in a long-term commitment like marriage, constant turbulence eventually wears people down. It makes you wonder how many of these passionate, volatile romances would truly stand the test of time and everyday life stressors. The OCR directly mentions "Colleen" and "her couples are written SO badly," echoing this sentiment. Another prime example is Feyre and Tamlin from *A Court of Thorns and Roses*. Before Rhysand entered the picture, their relationship showcased significant red flags. Tamlin's controlling nature and his eventual imprisonment of Feyre, even if born from a warped sense of protection, are clear indicators of an unhealthy dynamic. A healthy marriage thrives on freedom, trust, and mutual respect, not on one partner dictating the other's life. The OCR's mention of "Feyre and tampon" (likely Tamlin) and "before Rhysand came into the picture" perfectly captures this problematic pairing. While it's thrilling to read about these dramatic and intense relationships, it's also practical to recognize that not every love story is meant for a "happily ever after" in the traditional sense. Some authors even deliberately explore "divorce themes" or "dark romance" to delve into the complexities of human connection, showing how passion can sometimes be intertwined with problematic behaviors. These stories can be incredibly thought-provoking, prompting us to consider what we value in real-life partnerships. So, while we might root for them in the pages, a little part of me always wonders about these book couples once the final chapter closes. Which fictional relationships do you think are destined for divorce? I’d love to hear your thoughts and other examples down below!
