Questionnaires do not stop breaches

In my experience working in cybersecurity, I’ve seen firsthand how security questionnaires can create a false sense of protection. These questionnaires often ask vendors or third parties to self-report their security measures, but they rarely verify the accuracy or completeness of the responses. Because of this, many risks remain hidden until a breach occurs. What I found particularly challenging is the over-reliance on checklists that don’t account for real-time changes in the threat landscape or vendor environments. Questionnaires typically provide a snapshot rather than continuous risk assessment, which is often critical given how quickly vulnerabilities can emerge. It’s like relying on a car’s inspection sticker from months ago without checking the tires or brakes today. To truly mitigate third-party risk, I recommend supplementing questionnaires with active monitoring techniques such as penetration testing, security audits, and leveraging automated tools that continuously scan for vulnerabilities and suspicious activity. Engaging in direct communication with vendors to validate their security posture and requiring evidence-based proof (for example, compliance certifications like SOC 2 or ISO 27001) can also provide stronger assurance than self-reported questionnaires alone. Ultimately, questionnaires can be a useful component of a broader security strategy, but they cannot be the only line of defense. Organizations need a layered approach that includes human expertise, technical controls, and ongoing evaluation to better protect sensitive information from breaches caused by third-party weaknesses.
