Last drawing of the year

Drawing Zendaya for my last piece of the year was such a rewarding challenge, and I wanted to share some insights into how I approach creating what I hope will be considered one of my 'best drawings' yet! When it comes to drawing a 'person looking up,' perspective is everything. The angle of the head, the slight foreshortening of the chin and neck, and the way the eyes and brows shift all play a huge role. For Zendaya's portrait, I spent a lot of time studying reference photos to understand how her features change from that specific viewpoint. It’s not just about drawing what you see, but understanding why it looks that way. I usually start with light construction lines to map out the overall head shape and the central axis of the face, then refine the placement of the eyes, nose, and mouth, paying close attention to their angled relationship. Getting that initial structure right is crucial for a realistic and dynamic pose. To achieve a truly 'best drawing' quality, especially with graphite, realism is often the goal. My process involves building up layers slowly. I start with lighter grades of graphite (like 2H or HB) for initial shading and gradually move to darker ones (like 2B, 4B, and even 6B or 8B) for deeper shadows and rich contrast. Blending is key, and I use a variety of tools – blending stumps, tortillons, and even soft brushes – to achieve smooth transitions and avoid harsh lines.
