And to make sure I'm never without a spark, I tuck some strike anywhere matches inside the vial with the lint. That way, I have an all-in-one fire-starting solution that's compact and incredibly reliable. When you need a fire, simply pull out the lint, fluff it up a bit to expose more surface area, and light it with one of your matches. The duct tape ball can help extend the burn time if you really need to get some stubborn kindling going. It's surprisingly effective and incredibly lightweight, which is a huge plus when every ounce in your bugout bag matters. Cotton balls soaked in petroleum jelly are another fantastic option – they burn for a surprisingly long time. Char cloth, made from cotton fabric, is also excellent for catching a spark from a ferro rod. The key is to have something that catches a spark or flame easily and burns long enough to ignite your kindling. Having a variety of options ensures you're prepared for different conditions and resource availability. Ultimately, whether you choose a commercial product or a DIY hack, practice makes perfect.
