My first DNF

Ugh this book was so cliché…

The MC supposedly murder her bff but can’t remember and a podcast wants to rehash it. It feels like a bad A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder. Every chapter she thinks about murdering strangers, family members, and her bf. AND to top it off, she hears voices to kill. It’s too much too often and poorly driven. I tried my best to finish it cause it was apart of my library’s book club for the month.

If anyone likes it let me know why?… maybe I’ll give it another try.

... Read more"Listen for the Lie" is a psychological thriller that has garnered mixed reactions, and understanding its context can help readers appreciate or critique it more fully. The novel revolves around a main character who supposedly murdered her best friend but cannot remember the event, with a podcast revisiting the case, a concept that taps into the popular true-crime genre. However, as noted in several reviews, including Stephen King's endorsement, the book is described as dark, twisty, and thrilling, yet some readers find its execution challenging. One key point is the novel’s use of internal turmoil, where the protagonist frequently contemplates violence and hears voices, reflecting severe psychological distress. While this adds to the intensity, it may overwhelm readers who prefer a more subtle build-up in thrillers. The psychological themes require a balance between suspense and credibility, and when overused as in this book, they risk alienating the audience. The comparison to "A Good Girl's Guide to Murder" highlights a common challenge in thriller writing: originality. Many thrillers explore similar tropes such as memory loss, unreliable narrators, and murder mysteries revisited by media, making it essential for authors to inject fresh perspectives or compelling character development to engage readers effectively. For readers drawn to audiobooks, "Listen for the Lie" offers an immersive experience that can enhance the story through dramatic narration. However, engagement with the plot depends heavily on personal taste, especially regarding the darker psychological elements. If you enjoy thrillers with complex characters and dark themes and are intrigued by podcasts unfolding unsolved mysteries, "Listen for the Lie" might be worth a try despite its polarizing aspects. On the other hand, for those seeking a more grounded or less intense thriller, exploring other books within the genre, including well-received titles recommended by authors like Amy Ales Mietelides or Liane Moriarty, could be more rewarding. Ultimately, reading reviews, sampling chapters, or listening to excerpts can help gauge whether this novel fits your preferences. Engaging with community feedback, such as book clubs or forums tagged #listenforthelie and #thrillerbooks, offers deeper insights and diverse opinions that enrich the reading experience.

I’d never believed I could put a book on a DNF list. I’m one of those people that could start watching a crappy movie, and I’ll watch it until the end just because I feel like I already invested time in starting it and now I gotta see it through. So naturally I would feel that way about books too.
