What helped me tremendously was embracing the concept of self-compassion—being as gentle with myself as I would be with a dear friend going through a tough time. When you start choosing yourself, it’s natural to feel guilt or doubt, but acknowledging these feelings without judgment can pave the way for real growth. I also found setting small, manageable boundaries very effective. These boundaries served as daily reminders that my wellbeing mattered. For instance, saying no to extra work to preserve mental health or spending time doing activities that brought genuine joy helped me reconnect with who I truly am. Remember, the journey of choosing yourself isn’t about perfection; it’s about progress. Every time you refuse to be harsh on yourself, you reinforce the invaluable lesson that your needs deserve attention and respect. Over time, this shift not only improves your relationship with yourself but also enriches your interactions with others. If you’re starting this path, I encourage you to be patient and kind, celebrate small victories, and recognize that choosing yourself is an act of courage and love. It’s the hardest lesson, yes, but undoubtedly the most empowering one you’ll ever learn.
