Things my mom couldn’t teach me

2024/12/9 Edited to

... Read moreIt’s never too late to pick up a new skill, especially one that brings so much joy and warmth to your home! For me, that skill has been baking, and I truly began *teaching myself how to bake at 33*. It wasn't something my mom taught me – our family traditions were more about convenience, like the beloved "thaw & bake" cookies. And honestly, those were great at the time! But as I got older, I felt a longing for something more personal, something I could truly call my own tradition. This journey into baking has been incredibly intertwined with my own #healingjourney. There’s something so meditative about the process – the measuring, mixing, watching dough rise, and the incredible aroma that fills the kitchen. It’s a wonderful way to practice mindfulness and find a sense of calm amidst daily life. Each successful loaf of bread or batch of cookies feels like a small victory, a testament to my own efforts and growth. It’s been a profound way to #gettoknowme, discovering a creative side I didn't fully realize I had. Moving beyond the simplicity of "thaw & bake" was a bit intimidating at first. I started with simple recipes, focusing on understanding the basics of ingredients and techniques. My goal was to create new cookie traditions that weren't just about quick treats, but about the love and effort put into them. I envisioned making these with my own children someday, sharing the process and not just the finished product. There’s a magic in baking from scratch, knowing every ingredient that goes in, and feeling the texture of the dough in your hands. For anyone else out there contemplating starting a new hobby later in life, especially baking, here are a few things I've learned that might help: Start Simple: Don't try to bake a multi-tiered cake on your first go. Begin with easy recipes like basic chocolate chip cookies, banana bread, or muffins. Success in small steps builds confidence. Embrace the Mess & Mistakes: You will burn things, your dough won't always rise perfectly, and sometimes things just won't look like the picture. That’s okay! Every mistake is a learning opportunity. My first few attempts at sourdough were… interesting, to say the least! Find Your Resources: There are countless free tutorials on YouTube, baking blogs with step-by-step photos, and beginner-friendly cookbooks. Find what resonates with you and absorb as much knowledge as you can. I’ve found some amazing communities online that have been super supportive. Invest in A Few Good Tools: You don't need a professional kitchen, but a good stand mixer (if your budget allows), reliable measuring cups and spoons, a kitchen scale, and quality baking sheets can make a huge difference. Bake for Joy, Not Perfection: Ultimately, this is about the experience and the pleasure it brings. The taste, the smell, the act of giving. Don't let the pursuit of perfection steal your joy. Some of my most beloved bakes are the ones that looked a little rustic but tasted incredible. This journey of learning to bake has been so much more than just acquiring a new skill. It’s been about self-discovery, finding a creative outlet, and building a new legacy to *pass down*. It's a reminder that it's never too late to cultivate passions that truly nourish your soul and create meaningful connections. What new traditions are you hoping to start?
