PART 1: Skin Facts They Didn’t Teach You in School

• Skincare doesn’t have to be expensive to actually work. Most of the time, consistency + the right ingredients matter way more than luxury packaging.

• Please don’t use hydrogen peroxide on wounds—it can actually irritate tissue and slow down proper healing.

• Skin cancer doesn’t show up overnight. UV damage builds slowly over years (often starting way back in childhood) before it ever becomes visible.

• Your skin is constantly turning over—about every month—which is why sticking with a routine actually makes a difference over time.

• Skincare isn’t instant. Most products are supporting your skin barrier and natural processes, not “fixing” things overnight. Give your products some time to actually work!

... Read moreFrom my own experience in skincare and dermatology, I've seen how many people misunderstand the basics about treating their skin. One common pitfall is assuming that expensive products are automatically better. In reality, as highlighted, the key lies in consistent use and effective ingredients like benzoyl peroxide and adapalene, which can be found in many affordable drugstore options such as PanOxyl or Differin. For example, benzoyl peroxide helps prevent acne by reducing bacteria, while adapalene promotes skin cell turnover to clear clogged pores. Another important note is about wound care: though hydrogen peroxide is often used at home to clean cuts and scrapes, it can actually damage healthy skin cells and delay healing. Instead, gentle cleansing and using a proper healing ointment, like petroleum-based products (e.g., Aquaphor or Vaseline), supports tissue repair without irritation. Skin cancer prevention is a topic I always emphasize. UV damage accumulates silently over years starting in childhood, which is why daily sun protection—even on cloudy days or indoors—is essential. Using broad-spectrum sunscreen and protective clothing helps reduce the long-term risk. The skin's natural renewal cycle, roughly every 27-30 days, means changes from skincare routines take time. It’s not about instant fixes but about nurturing the skin barrier consistently with moisturizing and barrier-supporting ingredients like ceramides and niacinamide. Patience is critical—results can take weeks to become visible. I recommend developing a sustainable skincare routine suited to your skin type, focusing on cleansing, protection, and gradual treatment rather than chasing quick, expensive solutions. In my experience, sharing these foundational facts helps set realistic expectations and leads to healthier, more resilient skin over time.
