I’ll always love the bond I spent my childhood fighting for, even when it felt unreachable

Growing up in a home misshaped by substance abuse and emotional neglect taught me one thing: he wasn’t there. They said he didn’t want to be, and maybe he didn’t, because I didn’t want to be in that house either. No parent is perfect, but becoming a parent makes you understand so much more. We grow, we heal, and we learn what we deserved all along.

I deserved to have my dad, but I don’t think I ever truly understood everything happening in everyone’s life at the time. Childhood flies by, and as you get older you realize how heavy those grudges really are. Don’t hold them too tight. With age comes patience, not because the hurt disappears, but because the love is still there. @kirsten marie ☻ you got me with this trend girl. 😭 #neurodivergent #oldestchild

... Read moreChildhood experiences shape much of who we are, especially when they involve hardship like substance abuse and emotional neglect. The pain felt when a parent is absent or emotionally unavailable leaves a lasting impact, often making it difficult to understand or forgive at a young age. Many who grow up in such environments carry heavy grudges, not just towards their parents but also towards themselves for perceived abandonment or inadequacy. One key aspect of healing from these wounds is recognizing that no one is perfect, including parents. Life circumstances, mental health challenges, or addiction can cloud a parent's ability to be present. This understanding doesn't erase the pain, but it opens the door to compassion and patience. As people mature, they often gain insight into the broader context of their family's struggles, allowing them to reassess old grievances in a new light. The genuine smiles captured in old family photos, even if rare, symbolize moments of connection and hope. They remind us that love can persist beneath the surface, waiting to be acknowledged and nurtured. For individuals labeled as neurodivergent or oldest children, navigating these dynamics can be uniquely challenging due to heightened responsibilities or different ways of processing emotions. Supportive communities and sharing stories can provide validation and strength. Ultimately, healing the bond fought for during childhood is a gradual journey that involves forgiveness, acceptance, and growth. Embracing the complexities of family relationships allows individuals to reclaim their sense of worth and find peace. The love that remains constant, even when it felt unreachable, becomes a foundation for building healthier connections in adulthood.
