... Read moreIt’s one thing to know what habits you should be making or breaking, but it’s a whole other ball game figuring out how to actually do it! I’ve been there – staring at a list of good intentions, wondering where to even start. If you’re like me, trying to figure out how to make things a habit, or break those pesky five bad habits (or more!), here are some practical tips that have genuinely helped me. How I Make Good Habits Stick 1. Start Ridiculously Small: This was a game-changer for me. Instead of saying, “I’m going to get more sleep,” I started by just going to bed 15 minutes earlier. Instead of “moving my body more” with an hour-long workout, I committed to 5 minutes of stretching in the morning. When it feels too easy, you're more likely to do it consistently. Once it's a routine, you can gradually increase the effort. 2. Habit Stacking: This strategy is brilliant! I link a new habit to an existing one I already do without thinking. For example, after I brush my teeth every morning (existing habit), I immediately meditate for two minutes (new habit). Or, after I pour my morning coffee, I make sure to drink a full glass of water. This makes it almost automatic and helps me with habits like drinking more water or practicing meditation. 3. Design Your Environment for Success: I used to struggle with things like 'leaving my comfort zone' or 'trying new things' because the opportunities weren't visible. Now, I make it easy! I leave my running shoes by the front door if I want to jog. I keep a book on my nightstand instead of my phone if I want to read before bed to help with getting more sleep. To establish boundaries, I set specific 'do not disturb' times on my phone. Make the desired action the path of least resistance. 4. Track Your Progress: There’s something incredibly motivating about seeing a streak. I use a simple calendar and put an 'X' on each day I complete a habit. Missing a day isn’t the end of the world, but seeing that chain of 'X's makes me want to keep it going. This visual cue helps solidify good habits like cooking nutritious meals or honoring my own needs by taking time for myself. How I Break Bad Habits for Good Breaking bad habits, especially those like gossiping, judging others, or mindless scrolling, requires a different approach. It’s not just about stopping; it’s about replacing and understanding. 1. Identify Your Triggers: This is crucial. When do I tend to start mindless scrolling? Is it when I’m bored, stressed, or waiting? Once I identified that my phone was my go-to when I felt awkward in social settings, I started carrying a small notebook instead. Understanding why I do a bad habit helps me address the root cause. 2. Replace, Don't Just Remove: Trying to just stop a habit often creates a void. Instead of judging yourself and others, for instance, I try to consciously practice empathy or curiosity. If I catch myself about to gossip, I actively shift the conversation to something positive or change the subject. For mindless scrolling, I replace it with reading a chapter of a book or doing a quick chore. 3. Make It Harder to Do the Bad Habit: Just as I make good habits easy, I make bad habits difficult. My phone used to live by my bed, which often led to staying up too late and scrolling. Now, I charge it in another room. This small barrier is often enough to stop the impulse. If there’s a particular app leading to mindless scrolling, I hide it deep within folders or even delete it for a few days. 4. Practice Self-Compassion and Patience: Breaking habits isn't a straight line; there will be slip-ups. Instead of judging myself harshly or not being honest with myself about my struggles, I acknowledge them, learn from them, and get right back on track. Remember, the goal is progress, not perfection. It’s a journey of continuous improvement, and every small step counts towards becoming your best self.
