AND SO I WRITE (Series on Mental Illness)

And so I write…I write about being mentally ill to help those who may not suffer from a mental illness understand what it is like. I write to help those who do suffer from it know that they are not alone. I write with the hope that something I say will help remove the stigma associated with the words “mental illness.” I have been criticized for it, but it will not stop me. I have been told that I choose to be depressed. Why on earth would anyone choose to be depressed? I would not wish it on anyone! I have been told by a family member, “I sure wish you could get off that crap.”

I wonder if they have forgotten what I was like before meds? I feel more stable than I have in my entire life! Thank you, duloxetine and lamotrigine! Thank you estradiol and progesterone! The first two medications are antidepressants and the combo works well for me. The last two medications are hormone replacement therapy. When I went on HRT, I felt better, but still not quite myself. I have been on quite a few antidepressants along my journey, Celexa, Lexapro, Sinequan (one I will never forget), and Zoloft. Those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

I overdosed on Zoloft, so I was taken off that one immediately. Yes, sadly it was on purpose. You see, that is what depression does to you. It makes you feel like things will never get any better. I didn't really want to die, I just wanted the neverending pain to STOP! I was then put on Cymbalta. I started therapy at my local mental health center. I was better on the Cymbalta, but not quite there yet, so my psychiatrist added lamotrigine (the generic for Lamictal). Duloxetine is the generic for Cymbalta, and that is what I take now. My doc had to keep adjusting the lamotrigine until we got to the right amount to keep me stable, but, by Ned, she did it! I am so much better. First of all, I thank God for putting me on the right path to get the help I needed. I also thank East Alabama Mental Health Center, and the staff there who helped me on my journey out of the darkness.

... Read moreMental illness affects millions worldwide, yet stigma often silences those impacted. If you or someone you know struggles with mental health, it's vital to seek help and share your story. Organizations like NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) provide resources and support for individuals and families alike. Remember, you are not alone in this journey. The connection between mental health and medication is complex, with many patients benefiting from various treatments. It's essential to have open discussions with healthcare providers about effective strategies for managing conditions like depression and anxiety. Educating ourselves about mental health conditions can foster understanding and empathy in our communities. Engaging in therapy, joining support groups, and exploring medication options can illuminate paths toward recovery and stability. The road to mental well-being may be fraught with challenges, but recovery is possible with the right support and dedication. Prioritizing mental health informs our overall well-being, which is reflected not just in our personal lives, but also in our interactions with others. By sharing our experiences, we can help dismantle the stigma surrounding mental illness and empower others to seek help.

Women and Mental Illness (Books)
I've been doing a lot of thinking lately about mental health, especially for us women 🧠✨ It's like...society expects us to be superheroes, juggling a million things while always looking perfect and put-together. No wonder so many of us are burning out! 🔥 Honestly, I used to feel so alone
