Choosing yourself can truly be one of the hardest decisions you’ll ever face. When I first started prioritizing my own needs and well-being, it felt overwhelming and even selfish at times. Society often teaches us to put others first, so going against that norm felt like a huge emotional hurdle. Over time, though, I noticed a shift. Each small choice I made to prioritize myself—whether that was setting boundaries, saying no to plans that drained me, or dedicating time to self-care—made the next decision easier. It was like building muscle; the more I exercised this self-respect, the stronger it got. The phrase “It gets easier as time goes on” resonated deeply with me because it validated the struggle while offering hope. The quote from #BlackTikTok, "Sometimes choosing yourself is one of the hardest things you'll ever have to do," captures the emotional intensity behind these decisions. But it also reminds us that the effort is worthwhile. What helped me was surrounding myself with supportive people who encouraged my growth and understood my choices without judgment. Also, reflecting on my progress helped me appreciate how far I’d come. Journaling my thoughts and feelings created clarity and motivation to continue choosing myself. In essence, the journey of self-prioritization is not linear, but it’s rewarding. Every step taken towards self-choice strengthens your confidence and resilience.
