Know Their Names - A Pride Series Day 3
For the next 12 days, I’m sharing the names of LGBTQ+ figures who changed the world. Many were denied recognition. Some are still denied a place in history books.
This isn’t for likes.
This is a reminder:
We have always been here.
We have always fought back.
And no matter how hard they try to erase us, our truth remains.
🌟Day 3: Bayard Rustin🌟
He changed the world, but they hid his name.
Bayard Rustin was a Black gay man.
A Quaker. A pacifist. A civil rights warrior.
He organized. He strategized. He mobilized.
He didn’t just attend the 1963 March on Washington.
He planned it.
Every bus, every speech, every piece of paper, that was Bayard.
He taught Dr. King the principles of nonviolence.
He trained thousands in civil disobedience.
He helped birth a movement.
But they kept him in the shadows.
Why?
Because he was gay.
Because he’d been arrested for it.
Because homophobes, both white and Black, called him a liability.
So they used him... then pushed him aside.
Bayard didn’t get the mic.
He didn’t get the cover stories.
He didn’t get the statue.
He got silenced.
But Bayard never stopped fighting.
He fought for racial justice.
He fought for workers.
And long before it was safe, he fought for us, queer people, to be seen and protected under the law.
He died in 1987.
But the systems he helped build still stand.
They erased his name. We write it back in.
Because the March on Washington didn’t just happen.
A Black gay man made it happen.
And we owe him more than silence.
Say his name.
Say it proud.
Say it gay.
