Oh, the dread of that first winter in Vintage Story! When I first started playing, with about 29 hours and 14 minutes under my belt, I quickly learned that the changing seasons aren't just for show – winter can be absolutely brutal if you're not prepared. I remember scrambling, freezing, and constantly running out of food. That's why I'm sharing my personal survival guide to help you not just endure, but truly thrive in the cold! Preparing for Winter: Your Top Priority The key to successful winter survival in Vintage Story is preparation, and I can't stress this enough. First, secure your shelter. Winter brings harsh winds and blizzards. Make sure your base is well-insulated. I usually upgrade my walls to stone or plaster them inside for better thermal properties. Seal any openings – even small gaps can let the cold in and drop your body temperature faster than you'd think. A good roof is non-negotiable! Next, food, food, food! This is where most players struggle. Hunting becomes incredibly difficult as animals are scarce or harder to track in the snow. My strategy is to gather and preserve as much as possible during autumn. Focus on building a proper cold storage system. Digging a deep cellar (at least 3-4 blocks down, ideally more) is excellent for keeping food fresh longer, especially meat and vegetables. Another trick I learned is to ferment vegetables and make cheese; these last indefinitely and are great for emergencies. Clothing is your best friend. Craft the warmest clothing you can get your hands on. Fur coats and wool leggings are game-changers. Layers are key! Don't underestimate the power of a warm hat and gloves to maintain your body temperature when you have to venture outside. Finally, stockpile fuel. Chop down plenty of trees for firewood or mine coal. You'll need a constant heat source for your home and for cooking. Running out of fuel in the middle of a blizzard is a rookie mistake I definitely made once! What to Do When Winter Hits Once the snow falls and temperatures plummet, your focus shifts to maintaining warmth and managing resources. Body Temperature Management: This is critical. Inside your base, keep a fire roaring. Outside, always carry a torch or a portable campfire. If you're exploring, stick to short bursts and always have a mental map back to warmth. Hot meals also provide a temporary warmth buff, so cook up those stews! Food Scarcity: Even with cold storage, food can run low. This is a good time to try ice fishing if you have a reliable spot, or perhaps set up traps for smaller game. I’ve found that foraging for certain roots or berries can still be possible in some biomes, but it's a risky venture. Limited Exploration: Winter isn't the best time for grand exploration. The cold, reduced visibility, and slower movement in deep snow make it dangerous. I tend to focus on indoor projects during winter – crafting, mining within my base, or expanding my farm indoors. Animal Care: If you have livestock, make sure they have a warm, enclosed space. Transporting animals in winter can be a nightmare due to the cold and snow, so plan their movement before the first frost. Build them a cozy barn with some torches or even a small campfire if they get too cold.
