Daily Devotional: Meditating on the Word
Every day, we are being shaped by something. Voices, opinions, distractions, and desires all compete for our attention. Psalm 1 clearly lays out two paths: one rooted in God's truth, and one carried along by the influence of the world.
Notice how the psalm describes the drift: walk, stand, and sit... it's subtle. It begins with listening, then lingering, and eventually settling. This is why what we meditate on matters so deeply. What we repeatedly think about will eventually shape who we become.
But there is another way.
The one who delights in God's Word and meditates on it day and night is compared to a tree planted by streams of water. This tree is not striving to survive; it is positioned to thrive. Its source is steady. Its nourishment is constant. Even when seasons change, it does not wither.
"He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper." - Psalm 1:3
Meditation on God's Word is about positioning your heart near the source. It is choosing, again and again, to return to His truth; to let it fill your mind, guide your thoughts, and steady your soul.
You don't become rooted in a single moment of passion, but through a life of quiet, consistent returning.
Today, read Psalm 1, choose one verse that stands out to you.
- Read it slowly.
- Repeat it throughout your day.
- When your mind drifts, gently bring it back.
- Let it shape how you think, speak, and respond.
What you dwell on will determine where you are planted.
