🏔️ Mt. Baker's Ptarmigan Ridge: An Epic Glacier View Hike

The Ptarmigan Ridge Trail is one of the most iconic and rewarding high-alpine hikes in the Mt. Baker Wilderness of Washington State. It offers unparalleled, up-close views of the towering glaciers on the east face of Mt. Baker (Koma Kulshan) and the jagged peak of Mt. Shuksan.

Trail Overview

The route begins at the famous Artist Point parking lot and follows a dramatic ridge line, eventually leading hikers to the area near Camp Kiser, a popular turnaround spot with stunning glacial views.

* Location: Mt. Baker Wilderness, Washington.

* Distance & Difficulty: The round-trip is typically 9 to 12 miles with an elevation gain of 1,300 to 2,400 feet. It’s rated as moderate to strenuous due to the rugged, exposed terrain.

* Best Season: The accessibility window is short. It's generally best from mid-August through late September when snow cover is at its minimum.

⚠️ Essential Advice & Preparation

* Snow Management: Due to the high elevation, snow lingers well into summer. It is highly recommended to carry trekking poles and traction devices (microspikes) for safe travel across snowfields.

* Water is Scarce: Reliable water sources are limited past the Chain Lakes junction. You must carry plenty of water—at least 3 liters per person is strongly advised.

* Exposure: The trail is almost entirely above the treeline, offering zero shade. Be prepared with sunscreen, hats, and layers to protect against sun and wind exposure.

* Parking Pass: A valid Northwest Forest Pass or America the Beautiful Pass must be displayed in your vehicle at the Artist Point trailhead.

how do we not talk about this national park more!?
Ok ok, I know Olympic National Park is fairly well known, but the fact that it’s not in most people’s top three national park list is an absolute CRIME! Don’t get me wrong, I love Yellowstone and The Grand Canyon, but you will never get as much biodiversity in one place as Olympic National Park.
