The Truth About These 'Herbs' For Addiction
Not every plant discussed in addiction spaces is meant to heal. Some are used to interrupt a crisis, while others are meant to restore what addiction disrupts... the nervous system, liver, gut, and brain chemistry.
Plants like kratom, ibogaine, and cannabis often come up because they can reduce discomfort or suppress withdrawal in the short term. That doesn’t make them recovery tools. Many of them act on dopamine or opioid pathways, which means they can pause one dependency while quietly creating another if used without structure, limits, or medical oversight.
True recovery isn’t about replacing substances, even plant ones. It’s about helping the body relearn regulation. That means supporting neurotransmitter balance, repairing detox pathways, restoring mineral reserves, and calming an overstimulated nervous system that’s been living in survival mode for too long.
There is a place for harm reduction. There is also a place for deep, restorative healing. Confusing the two is where people get stuck.
Herbal medicine works best when it’s honest about what a plant can and can not do. Not every powerful plant belongs in every phase of recovery. Timing, intention, and nervous system readiness matter.
