What is Muscle dysmorphia(MD)?

Let's Spread Awareness

What is Muscle dysmorphia(MD)?

This is an eating disorder, primarily affecting males, where individuals are preoccupied with their bodies not being muscular enough or big enough (Raymond et al., n.d.)

Common signs:

• excessively high protein intake

•excessive exercise, especially weight lifting, often causing them to skip events

• constant concerns with body fat percentage

•substance abuse (steroids, caffeine, creatine, etc.)

• distorted body image perception (think they are small even though they appear very muscular to others)

Note: there are many other signs; these are just the most common (Raymond et al., n.d.)

... Read moreMuscle Dysmorphia (MD) is a serious psychological issue that goes beyond just physical appearance. It can lead to health complications, including cardiovascular problems and mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression. Understanding the root causes is vital for effective intervention. Many individuals might develop this disorder due to societal pressures related to body image, prevalent in today's fitness culture. The influence of social media can exacerbate feelings of inadequacy and contribute to a cycle of unhealthy behaviors. Counseling and therapy are essential for treating MD, focusing on body image improvement and developing a healthier relationship with food and exercise. Involving support groups can also help individuals feel less isolated and more understood in their struggles. The road to recovery involves addressing both mental and physical health, promoting a balanced approach to fitness that emphasizes overall well-being rather than just appearance. Awareness is crucial; by understanding and recognizing MD, both individuals and society can foster a healthier attitude towards body image and fitness.

weight gain is okay 🫶
in the year of 2020, quarantine and invisalign was a big factor for how i lost over 25-30 pounds. i honestly didn’t eat much and i lost a lot of weight. since then, i’ve kept around 125lbs—but for the past maybe year or so, i’ve lost a lot of my habits previously and have gained around 10 pounds.
