June is for Men’s mental health month. Just check in with the men in your life
Men's Mental Health Month in June serves as an important reminder of the unique challenges that men face when it comes to mental health. From my own experience, many men hesitate to open up about their feelings due to societal expectations around masculinity. This month encourages us to break the stigma by simply checking in with the men around us — whether family members, friends, or colleagues. It's important to understand that mental health struggles are not always visible. For example, a man might appear fine on the outside but could be struggling with stress, anxiety, or depression internally. A simple question like “How have you been feeling lately?” can open the door to meaningful conversations. Research shows that 94% of people acknowledge the need for mental health awareness, and this statistic reminds us how vital it is to keep the conversation going. By giving men a safe space to share their feelings, we empower them to seek help without fear of judgment. In practical terms, supporting men’s mental health can include encouraging them to engage in activities that promote well-being, such as exercise, hobbies, or social events. It also involves being patient and listening actively when they do choose to talk. During this month, consider setting reminders to reach out or simply spending quality time together. Your presence can be a powerful form of support. Remember, checking in isn’t just for June — it’s a practice that can nurture healthier relationships year-round.
