College is complicated enough…

So the fashion should be easy!

Because of med school, we have a uniform. While this DOES include a scrub top with our name embroidered, the top is only really enforced on test days, so this is probably what you’ll find me in on an average day! While this isn’t exhaustive, it’s the gist of exactly what I wear the vast majority of the time!

I already have to put so much effort into school that the decision-making exhaustion hits when it comes to my clothes. This way, I can just grab whatever shirt from my drawer and be good to go! My jewelry only comes off for patients encounters and at least my watch will come off for exams (of course)! I do miss having nails but we can still paint them when we don’t have encounters, just no acrylics or length because that can carry bacteria!

What are your thoughts on uniforms? Have you had to follow one?

... Read moreHey everyone! Building on my earlier thoughts about med school uniforms, I wanted to dive a bit deeper into why they're such a big part of our lives and share some more tips I've picked up. It's not just about what you wear, but why you wear it, especially when you're thinking about how medical schools distinguish students during those crucial clinical rotations. From my experience, the uniform isn't just a dress code; it's a statement. First off, it's about identification and professionalism. When you're on rotation, patients and staff need to quickly know if you're a student, a resident, or an attending. Our embroidered scrub tops definitely help with that. Different hospitals or departments might even have specific colors for their students versus nurses or other staff, which is super interesting to observe. This helps everyone, especially patients, feel more secure knowing who's who. Then there's the big one: hygiene and safety. This is why things like specific shoes (my CloudMonsters are a godsend for long shifts!) are so important, and why certain accessories are restricted. I mentioned the nail thing before – no acrylics or length because bacteria can hide there. It sounds strict, but it makes total sense when you're working directly with patients. Similarly, dangling jewelry can be a hazard, getting caught or carrying germs. My everyday rings stay on, but anything more would be a no-go during patient encounters. It's all about minimizing risks. When it comes to the actual uniform pieces, while I love my basic tee under my scrub top for comfort and a touch of personal flair, the scrub pants are non-negotiable. Ceil blue is standard for us, and finding a jogger style that's both comfy and slightly cute makes a huge difference. You really do feel like a character from Grey's Anatomy sometimes! Beyond the basics, many schools also require a white lab coat, which adds another layer of identification and professionalism. It often has your name and school embroidered, further distinguishing you as a medical student. For those considering med school or currently navigating it, here are a few extra tips I wish I knew earlier: Invest in good shoes: Seriously, your feet will thank you. Look for comfort, support, and easy-to-clean materials. Layering is key: Classrooms and clinics can be freezing or boiling. My cozy sweatshirt or cardigan is essential for staying comfortable. Plus, it’s an easy way to add a bit of "style" when you're otherwise in uniform. Master the "under-scrub" game: Finding comfortable, breathable undershirts (like my preferred basic tees) can really elevate your daily wear. Look for moisture-wicking fabrics! Pocket power: Scrubs with plenty of functional pockets are a lifesaver for pens, notepads, and your phone. Laundry routine: Get a system down! You'll be washing scrubs often, so having enough sets and a good detergent is crucial. It's definitely a learning curve to balance the demands of med school with the uniform requirements, but with a bit of planning, you can make it work. It helps curb that decision-making exhaustion when getting ready for school every day!
