2026, I’m learning to breathe like I’m safe

I caught myself today — chest tight, breath shallow, shoulders up by my ears.

It’s a new year.

And my body was still shouting “DANGER” while I was answering emails.

This is how survival mode follows us into January.

Shallow breathing keeps the fight-or-flight response switched on.

We’re literally signaling to our nervous system that we’re under threat — all day, every day.

But here’s the quiet truth I’m starting the year with:

the breath is bidirectional.

If stress makes us breathe shallow, then breathing deeply can tell the body we’re safe.

→ box breathing: 4 in, 4 hold, 4 out, 4 hold

→ 3x daily, just 5 minutes

→ notice what shifts — not what changes

I’m not promising a “new you.”

I am promising that your body is listening.

When you slow down, drop into your belly, and breathe on purpose, you send a different message:

it’s safe to land. you can stop running now.

Maybe the reset we’re craving this year isn’t discipline or reinvention.

Maybe it’s regulation.

The breath is the bridge —

between last year and this one,

between conscious effort and unconscious safety.

This year, I’m practicing breathing like I’m safe — and letting my body catch up.

... Read moreStarting to breathe like you're safe—a simple yet profound practice—can transform not only how you experience stress but also how your body feels overall. The key lies in regulating the nervous system through deliberate breathwork, such as box breathing, which involves inhaling for four seconds, holding for four, exhaling for four, and holding again for four. This cyclical method helps activate the parasympathetic nervous system, signaling your body that it is safe and that it can downshift from the constant fight-or-flight state. Incorporating breathing exercises into your daily routine just three times a day for five minutes each session can gradually retrain your body's response. It’s not about immediately eradicating stress but noticing incremental shifts—how your chest relaxes, your breath deepens, and your shoulders lower. This gentle presence allows you to move away from chronic tension and survival mode that often follows us, especially at the start of a new year or during demanding times. Adopting this approach means recognizing that recovery from trauma and stress isn't solely about discipline or drastic change; it’s also about learning regulation—the ability to maintain unconscious safety through conscious effort. When you slow down, drop into your belly, and breathe deeply and purposefully, you send a different message to your nervous system: it is safe to land, to rest, to stop running. This mindset encourages embodied practice, where you become more aware and connected with your body's signals, helping to heal trauma and promote somatic healing. Breathwork is the bridge connecting last year's struggles with this year's opportunity for calm and presence. Remember, breathing differently this year is about inviting safety into your body and mind—a reset grounded in regulation and gentle awareness rather than relentless striving. Your body truly listens when you breathe with intention, allowing you to feel supported as you navigate life’s challenges with greater ease and resilience.
