·TEETHING EXPECTATIONS VS REALITY ·

... Read moreTeething is often portrayed as a straightforward process with a few predictable symptoms, but in reality, every baby’s journey can be vastly different. From my experience and sharing with other parents, it’s common for new moms and dads to expect mild fussing and maybe one or two teeth coming through at a time. However, some babies can surprise you by cutting multiple teeth simultaneously, which can feel overwhelming. One unexpected aspect many new parents encounter is that traditional soothing methods such as teething rings or breast milk popsicles don’t always provide long-lasting relief. For instance, a baby might only find comfort for a few seconds before reverting to crying. In such cases, using soft baby cloths or gently massaging the gums can be more effective. It’s also reassuring to learn that not all teething episodes lead to fever or illnesses. Some babies might show no obvious discomfort apart from a bleeding gum or random fussiness. Pediatricians often describe late teethers similarly, noting that the timeline can vary significantly without causing harm. The takeaway is that teething expectations should be flexible. Instead of rigidly following the ‘typical symptoms’ described in books or online, observing your baby’s unique responses and adapting your comfort techniques accordingly can make this challenging phase more manageable. Lastly, connecting with other first-time moms (FTMs) or parenting communities can provide emotional support and practical ideas tailored to your baby’s needs. Sharing personal teething experiences helps normalize the tough moments and celebrates the small victories along the way.
