Expectations vs. Reality: My first Apartment ✨

So the reality of decorating a first apartment is often WAKE UP 😂

1. It takes time to build a space. Start with the essentials and build from there. Your apartment will evolve organically, and that's a good thing.Focus on essentials first. Prioritize key pieces like a comfortable bed, a sofa, and a coffee table before buying accessories.

👀 I was on a blow up mattress for 4 months and went two months without a Tv!

2. For decor: strategically chosen rugs and lighting to make the space feel more intentional and complete.

3. Prioritizing function: use your amenities and make sure they are enjoyable to you so that you feel like you’re getting the best thing for your buck.

4. You are responsible for so much, including cleaning up after yourself and sometimes fixing things on the spot .

But alwaysss enjoy the apartment shopping 🥰 it really is fun. #apartmentprogress #homedecor #unfiltered #lemon8home #afforable

... Read moreWhen I first moved into my own place, I was absolutely buzzing with all these grand decorating ideas! Pinterest boards were overflowing with visions of a perfect, fully furnished space from day one. But let me tell you, that's where the 'notes' for a real first apartment begin – the reality is often a fantastic, messy, and incredibly rewarding journey of building a home. One of the biggest lessons I learned, just like in the original post, is that it truly takes time to build a space. You see those stunning images of a 'luxurious, decorative bed' with layers of throws and designer pillows? My reality started with a comfortable mattress and basic bedding. Slowly, over months, I added those decorative elements, finding deals on throw pillows and discovering bedding styles I genuinely loved. It's about starting with functionality and comfort, then letting your personal style evolve. Don't feel pressured to have everything picture-perfect immediately. Similarly, when I saw a 'modern apartment kitchen' in my head, I imagined perfectly 'organized, matching dishware.' In truth, my cabinets initially held a mix of hand-me-downs and budget-friendly essentials. As I cooked more, I realized what I genuinely needed and gradually invested in pieces that brought me joy, rather than buying a whole matching set upfront that I might not even love later. Prioritize durable, versatile items first, and let your collection grow organically. Another game-changer for me was embracing the amenities. It’s so easy to pay for an apartment with an 'outdoor pool and gym' and then never use them! But seriously, these are part of what you're paying for. I started making it a point to use the gym a few times a week and dip into the pool on hot days. Not only did it save me money on external memberships, but it also made my apartment feel like a resort. It was a great way to meet neighbors too! Thinking about function also extends to how you personalize your space. While big furniture pieces are important, don't underestimate the power of strategic lighting and cozy rugs to define areas and add warmth. These can make even the most basic setup feel intentional and inviting. And then there's the less glamorous side – the responsibilities! Trust me, no one prepares you for the sheer amount of cleaning you're suddenly solely accountable for. I remember my first time doing some serious 'toilet tank cleaning' and thinking, 'Wow, this is truly adulting.' My advice? Create a simple cleaning schedule and stick to it. Invest in a few good quality cleaning products that make the job easier, rather than just buying whatever's cheapest. Having things like an all-purpose cleaner, glass cleaner, a good scrub brush, and a vacuum on hand from day one makes a huge difference. Don't forget that sometimes things break or need a quick fix. Learning basic DIY skills or knowing who to call (landlord vs. personal responsibility) can save a lot of headaches and money. Ultimately, setting up your first apartment is a journey of discovery – about your taste, your habits, and your budget. It's okay if it doesn't look like a magazine spread immediately. Focus on making it a comfortable, functional, and joyful space that genuinely reflects you. These 'notes' are just a reminder that the messy, imperfect reality is often the most authentic and fulfilling part of making a house a home.
