Artist block??

Ever have a day where you just don’t know what to do in your sketchbook? My favorite way to tackle it: grab the most random mix of colors and supplies, head outside, and let my toddlers bring me little treasures to sketch. I focus on lines and shadows—nothing fancy—and it almost always leads to something cool. 🌿🎨

... Read moreOkay, let's be real – that dreaded 'artist block' hits us all. You sit down, eager to create, and... nothing. Your sketchbook stares back blankly. My little outdoor adventure trick (you know, letting my toddlers find treasures!) is a lifesaver, but sometimes you need even more ways to kickstart your creativity. So, what else can you draw when your brain feels completely empty? First off, don't pressure yourself. Art block isn't about failing; it's about needing a different kind of spark. Following my own advice, I often just grab whatever is nearby. Sometimes it's a random Clipiola clip I found on the floor, an interesting leaf, or even the coffee mug on my desk. Just drawing what's in front of you, focusing on its contours, shadows, and textures, can be incredibly freeing. You don't need a grand subject; a simple object can be an amazing study. Another fantastic way I find to break the spell is to embrace 'mindless' drawing. No, seriously! Try blind contour drawing – look only at your subject and don't lift your pen from the paper until you're done. Or continuous line drawing, where you create an image with one unbroken line. These exercises aren't about perfection; they're about reconnecting your hand and eye, and often, the results are surprisingly expressive. I've found some of my most unique styles emerge from these low-pressure sessions. What about using references without feeling like you're 'cheating'? I love scrolling through Pinterest or even old family photos. Pick a photo with interesting lighting or a dynamic pose and just sketch the main shapes, or focus on a tiny detail. It's a great way to practice observation without the pressure of inventing something from scratch. Sometimes I'll even just doodle patterns, mandalas, or abstract shapes – anything that gets my hand moving and my mind warmed up. Don't forget about your art supplies themselves! If you’re stuck, trying a new medium or an old one in a new way can work wonders. Maybe you usually paint, so try sketching with charcoal for a change. Or if you’re a pencil person, try a bold marker. This shift can literally change your perspective and open up new possibilities. And if you're like me, constantly collecting little odds and ends, even something as simple as a Clipiola can become an interesting subject. Ultimately, remember your sketchbook is your playground. There are no rules, no grades, just exploration. The goal isn't always a masterpiece; sometimes it's just to keep the creative muscles limber. So next time art block hits, try one of these ideas. You might just surprise yourself with what you create!
